A stroll alone the banks of the Father of Waters this morning found things pretty chilly, and it looked as though the effect of Sen. The lone fisherman in his shirt sleeves and a straw hat to keep off the burning rays of the sun, has maae nimseif scarce. The daily convention of the river rats has adjourned to meet in a warmer clime. Tony Farrell'a New Play. There is an air of romanoe about an Irish drama that is particularly inviting. The story of the rollick ing, devil-may-care Irish lad with his sweetheart, the truest of girls, is in teresting. At Harper's theatre to morrow evening, Tony Farrell, the clever singing Irish comedian, will present a scenic production of his new Irish comedy drama, "Garry Owen." It is a plav Billed with in cident and character parts, as well as many novel features. In the plot there is introduced a priest, and that holy personage is made the mark at which the villain and his ac complice aim. This fact adds inter est to the play from its newness. The incidents are skillfully handled, and the salient lesson taught is am ple justification. Mr. Farrell is an accomplished comedian of the Bouci- cault Bcnool, and his singing is al ways a charming feature of the per formance. He has pnt the play on ricnty ana in gooa taste, and sur rounded himself with a capital com pany. Iaoubtful About toe Doubt, We are justly proud of our jury sys tem, but tho 12 "good men and trne" are not always the wisest of mankind. At a recent session a prisoner was in dicted for pocket picking, and to most people in court the clearest possible case was made out by 'the prosecution. "Havo you anything you would like to tell the jury before they retire?" said the judge. "Well, all I wanter say is, I hopes as 'ow they'll give me the benefit of the doubt, " replied the prisoner despond ently. The jury considered their verdict They were uo littlo time over it "Can I assist you in anyway, gentle men?" said the judge, at last becoming impatieiit "We are almost agreed, me lud," said the foreman, ' 'but we can't quite un derstand what the doubt is the prisoner wishes ns to give him the benefit of. "I a at not a believer in ghosts, rein carnations or the supernatural in any shape, but I had a singular experience tome years ago which I have never been able to account for satisfactorily," said J. P. Lacroiz of Montreal. "I was second mate of a merchant ship in 1883. Among the crew was a tough customer named Lander, always in trouble. He had a frightful scar, ex tending from brow to chin, the result of a dock fight He had a bullet wound which had taken away the lobe of bis right ear, besides a peculiar protuber ance like a wen on bis forehead. I would take my oath there was not an other man alive marked just like him. At the end of that voyage Lander killed his wife and cut his own throat He severed the windpipe, but ho covered. The wound in his throat healed, but left a hole, which he had to cover with his hand when he spoke. He breathed through a silver tuba He was tried and convicted, and happening to be in port I was present at the hanging and saw the body buried. "In 185)0 I was on tho gold const of Africa. Ashore one day I came across a man bossing a gang of negro laborer. His form seemed strangely familiar, and I started with surprise when I saw him place his band over his throat when giving some orders. Going closer, I saw the scar, the wen, the lobeless ear, the hole in the throat the silver tube and every leature ana cnaractenstic oi a man I saw hanged and bnried. I got into conversation with him. He said his name was Danler. He was unable to tell how ho came by the wonnd in his throat ear and faoo. He said he must have had a long illness. He re membered being in a hospital, he said, but it was like a dream, and he had no recollection of his life before that "He said he remembered, while still ill, taking a long voyage he didn't know where from until he had landed where I met him. He told me my face looked like one he had seen in a dream. but he knew he had never seen me be fore. How do I account for it? I don't try ta I am only telling the facts. don't know whether Danler was Lander come to life again or a reincarnation of him. Maybe Lander's neck was not broken and some scientific chap had been experimenting on him with a bat tery. All I know is that no two men could possibly be marked in exactly the same way. If it was Lander, he was greatly benefited by the change, as on inquiry I found that he bore a splendid reputation as a quiet law abiding, peace able citizen. " Chicago Times. FAMILY HANDWRITING. Esperte Say All of a Oeaeratioa Have the Kane Characteristics. Experts in handwriting say that all the people of a singlo generation writo alike, and it is well known that most French handwriting has a strong family likeness to the eyes of others than Frenchmen. Nearlv all Chinamen of the washhouse class look alike to super ficial observers, and persons unaccus tomed to colored persons find difficulty in distinguishing one from another. It needs, however, a comparison of two or three family photograph albums of 20 or 30 years ago to convince men and women of today that there are strik ing superficial likenesses running through Americans of a given genera' tion. All these old albums show curious resemblances, chiefly perhaps of dress and face, but sufficiently striking for one family album at first glance to be taken for another. As page after page of each is turned over there is the same succession of men, women and children in full figure. Bitting, standing, pewed in groups or two or three, with hats. without hats, draped in shawls, and manifestly dressed in their best for the occasion. The photographers of those days chose, for reasons of their own, to make full length pictures, and as they were unusually small costume counted for a great deal and helped to intensify the general Likeness running the whole gen eration. Philadelphia Press. Caraot aad Jeaa Carries. The death of Jean Carries, the sculp tor, recalls an anecdote in which he and the late President Carnot were the prin cipal actors. The artist's busts and figures at the Champ de Mars excited the admiration of all, and they were de servedly classed in the first rank. M. Carnot when on his visit to the salon. noticed an old man, who seemed much moved on seeing him, standing before the works of art of the sculptor. Borne one said to the president after pointing out the artist: "Here is need for repara tion, M. le President Carries is one of our most skillful men of art, and he is not yet decorated." Forthwith M. Carnot detached from the buttonhole of one of the officers of the military house hold in the place of a cross of the chev alier a cross of an officer of the Legion of Honor nud placed it himself on the breast of Jean Carries. The next day. in The OfficieL, the artist was named a chevalier of the order. Loudon Figaro. Stanford's Retort. Once Senator Stanford was traveling through California in his private car. The tram had stopped at a small town. and the senator was leisurely strolling back and forth on the platform at the depot A baggageman was unloading trunks, and in doing so carelessly pitched one onto the platform, and it burst open. The senator looked at it and re marked, "WelL that's a shame. " The baggageman impudently asked, "Do yon own wis trunkf" The answer came quickly, "No, young m.ji, but I own this road. " Horseman. S.
