8 TOLD ABOUT TOWN. A Long Sought Offender Re turns Home to Die.' RECALLS A MYSTERIOUS PIEE. la the Solution or tVblth Oil Family Suf fer l-egal Proaecntlon, Hot lie Kemalna Mlrnt and Come Back m Pbyrleal Wreck Two Youthful Lmll! Lcare Heme and Ilecome Bonk A cent. Id a Kock Island home whose sur roundings have frequently been made the scenes of suspicion, a long-gought-for offender is sw iftJy nearing the eternal sleep the germs of the-lreai consumption having be come lirmly implanted. After years of disgrace and prosecution to liis family, which in his absence was compelled to shoulder the bur den of his wrong-doing, dedging the clutches of the authorities until physically broken down, he stealthily returns to die under the roof 4jf bis heart-broken mother's home. Al though known but to a very few, he has been home for some time, imme diately taking to confinement, from which it is believed he never can recover. The return of this man recalls nu merous inexplicable crimes in which he was auspieioned of implication, and particularly does it renew the re membrances of the mysterious con llagration a few winters ago, when the contents of a store were destroyed nnd the stock robbed. The authori ties smpicioned a certain ring of which the man was recognized as the leader. He was shadowed, and when within the grasp of a policeman, who was prepared to place him under ar rest, he made a desperate dash, ami disappeared, and his whereabouts have since, been unknown until now, when sickness drives him back. His mother's residence was afterward discovered to be the secret deposi tory of his plunders, and these goods which mysteriously disappeared from business houses were returned. Kvidenco sullicient to convict him of being an accomplice in the store robbery and lire was also found in the house, and tho matter drifted into the courts. The man could never bo apprehended, although dili gent search throughout the country was made for him. Indictments were returned against not only him, but other members of the family, who suffered the or deal of two long tria'.s. while he remained away silent, their belong ings being almost entirely squan dered in defense. The proceedings were finally dismissed agninst them, but th'! guilt was conclusively fas tened on the otic who roamed the country. The matter eventually passed from public view. Now the long sought fugitive renews the occur rence in the community and causes sorrow to his family by returning a physical wreck his "constitutional weakness being probably duo to the exposure which he subjected him self to in eluding detection. Two t.lrl Hook .tgent. The sudden departure of two of the city's attractive girls has occa Moned much gossip among their Acquaintances as to tho circum stances. l?nt the real facts arc, they have concluded to make their liveli hood as professional book asjents. Two ladies recently came to Daven port, and remained there a few weeks canvassing for literature. They were desirous of increasing their working forces. These two Kock Island girls one a stenographer in nn attorney's ollico and the other n store employe formed an acquaintance with them and were a"Kcd to consider the practicability of following the book agent business. An nflirmativo response was given, nnd tho two made preparations for their new departure. One the up town girl secured the consent of her parents first. But not so with tho down-town youngster. She knew objections would arise, and waived a parental consultation. She manufactured aa excuse for remov ing her clothes and trunk from homo, telling her parents she was going to visit at a jirl friend's home fur a week or so. There was no ob jection to this. She placed her be longings in an uptown friend house until ready to depart, which herself ami friend did a few nights after"1 with the book agents, going to Du buque. Now thu down town girl's parents are all broken up over their laughter's deception. Friends of the girls counseled with them against going, but the deaf ear was turned. The stenographer said that she would return if the work was not as represented, and resume her old duties without the knowledge of her employer, who is off on a varatu n Awarded Highest Honors World's Fair.
