Two People Tired of Life, Bat Fall la the Attempt. Shortly before 1 o'clock last night tbe Davenport patrol wagon was called to tbe look ol aiain street to carry s pirl named Clara Gates back to one ol tbe disreputable nouses ai Kock Island and r ront street, inai city. Clara bas been very anxious of late to get on tbe other aide ot tne pearly gates, but thej refuse to open. A month or two ago she toon a lot of poison, but that was pumpea out of ber. and last night sho walked into tbe river at tbe foot of Alain street. A couple of boatmen got her out and she was sent borne, very lit tle tbe worse and perhaps somewhat belter lor tbe bath, fcrasi jook, a young fellow employed in a west uavenport livery stauie, is aiso sup posed to have attempted suicide Sun day, having swallowed the contents of a bottle of aconite. A physician was called in time to save his ate. The Street Walk Ins; Habit. Commenting on the street walking babit in that city, tbe inbune says The Rock Island plan ot keeping young girls oft the streets at night by arresting those who are lounu out late without good and proper reason looks better the more one sees of life down town at night. Tbe number of voung girls who gad about tbe streets at night, and wno are 'going to the bad ' Is simrjlv aDDalltn?. They are easily spotted by the com' pany they keep, by tbeir manner 01 talk, by the way in which they carry themselves. Uavenport, notwitn standing the system which the mayor professes to believe is a gooa one, has the reputation among outsiders, and those traveling men who pick up such information by heresay, of be ing the most immoral city within their knowledge. Traveling men, as they pass along the streets, have habit of forming conclusions for themselves from what they observe The Tribune scribe has been told time after time by members of this profession that they never saw a city in which there was so much and so plain evidence of wholesale immorality. There can be no question but that it is due, in large part, to the system which obtains here, and also due, in part. to the fact that there is no such re straint as that which is now being practiced in Rock Island. The fact that there were about eighty arrests of immoral women during August is evidence enough of the increase of immorality among those who are openly strumpets, when the number but a few months ago did not exceed from 50 to 60. But it is tbe other feature that is doing the most harm that of street walking at night There are too many mothers who do not know where their daughters are spending their evenings. There are too many daughters who do not an preciate how they are hazarding their good names. If the mothers will not heed tbe warning it is time that tbe authorities did that which will in a measure protect these young girls from themselves and from men who are worse. Good citizenship and the good name of our city demand that something be done, and that spocdily. The evil is a crying one, and one that ought to be met and overcome, whether the present system is or is not rcsponsi me ior its existence." Bicycle Tournament. Dixon expects to have the largest bicycle meet held this season in northern Illinois. Thursday, Sept 6. is the date selected and a program 01 iu races ior class A riders is pro vided. The prizes are valuable and numerous, and it is believed that the events will attract the fastest Class A men in the country. Tbe raees will be held over the half mile tract of the Pleasure Park association, where is provided a comfortable grand stand and all the conveniences. How Bassets Have Cbaagod the Habits of Hassoalty. It is a little remarkable how the russet shoe has changed tbe habits of tbe people. This in turn has been the means of changing the market. As compared with prices a year ago the russet, as well as nearly all other grades of shoes, has advanced in price, and a close observer gives it as his opinion that prices will go sun nigner. n newer mis is uue to the leather trust or to the alleged plethora of money, he fails to state. But certain it is that several months ago when the tidings were wafted over the country many western dealers were forced to mark np both leather and shoes with an advance in the price, as it was only natural that shoes should also advance in price. People, however, had become accustomed to buying cneaper shoes, or shoes that were cheap, but of good quality, and some manufac turers bave continued turning out footwear at tbe old established price. The habit of tbe people in regard to buying cheap shoes has changed, and the russet shoe has been the cause of it. Comparisons of Cost. The expensive rnsset shoes will last for two or three seasons, but they cost at least twice as much as tbe shoes that look well through one season and then become shabby and suddenly break down all around. root wear is cheaper than it was a year ago, so far as tbe use of super ior qualities of leather in the general manufacture ot goods is concerned. and yet the prices are about the same. The russet shoe is essentially an article ol summer wear; still ex pensive makes have been sold for winter as well. It is surprising, however, what a difference there is in the quality sometimes of two pairs of cheap shoes manufactured by the same house. Shoes that sell for $3 and $3.50 sometimes go to pieces in a few weeks, while others last for months. The fact of the matter is that all tbe stitching is done by machinery and such shoes are weak or strong according as the girl or man who runs the machine has been careful or careless. Recently Passenger Agent Lusk, of tne Luamonu jo racket company, in speaking to a reporter for the (juincy journal oi tne death of Mrs. Key nolds, said: '-Her demise will have no effect whatever on the Diamond Jo steamboat business. She bad only one brother, J. Morton, and he is her sole heir. For many years he has been managing Mrs. Reynold's business, consequently has had more or less to do with the deceased's stock in the company, and it is fair to presume tnat no change will be made in the line. I have read in the papers that Mrs. Reynolds had two brothers, which is not true, for the reason that one of them died two or three years ago." Active operations on the court house have been temporarily sus pended, owing to tbe inabtlity of the Chicago Bridge & Iron company to furnish tbe iron as per agreement, Contractor Larkin being ready for its use now. it win probably be three weeks before tbe Chicago com pany can furnish its goods, and this much time will of necessity have to be lost, as the work bas progressed to that point where the iron is to be used. Kloqoent Basa. "Eloquence is speaking out out of the abundance of the heart," say the authors of "Guesses at Truth. " An In cident related by Dr. Barnardo, the English philanthropist who cares for friendless ohildren, illustrates this char acteristic of eloquence. "I was standing," be said, "at my front door one bitter day in winter. when a little ragged chap came up to me and asked me for an order of ad ntissifln. To test him' I protended to be rather rongh witu uim. " 'How do I know,' I said, 'if what yon tell mo is trne? Have yon any friends to speak for you?' " 'Friends I" ho shouted. 'No, I ain't got no friends, bnt if these 'ere rags' and he waved his arm about as he spoke 'won't speak for me, nothin else wilL'" Mixed. Private Letter of a Freuehwoman. Doable Doty. A capital story was once told of tho Rev. Thomas Haut, the veteran temper auce orator, wbo was well known iu the early history of the Wyoming valley, He was a somewhat eccentric man, bat possessed of remarkably quick wits. which stood him iu good stead ou many occasions. During the civil war he enlisted in one of the regiments of infantry raised in rhe valley and served as chaplain. One day in tho very fiercest of the bat tie a major rode up in front of the regi ment, and seeing Father Hunt at tho head of the ranks inquired in great m tonishment : "Chaplain, what are yon doing mere?1 "What am I doing?" repeated the stauch old minister quickly. "I'm cheer ing tbe hearts of the brave and watch ing the heels of the cowards!" He was evidently performing this donble task so well and thoroughly that tbe major could find no fault with him and left him to his self appointed charge. Youth's Companion When people are obliged to take medicine they want that it shall give quick relief and not add discomfort to their sufferings. Three reasons why people who suffer with consti pation and biliousness should take Simmon's Liver Regulator: It is better than pills, it does not gripe; it gives quick relief, and does not weaken bat strengthens and refreshes the whole system."
