Pkokia Herald: The American people will be pleased to know that the deal between Mrs. Vanderbilt and the Duke of Marlborough has been practically closed. She trades one daughter and several millions of money for a title. The American people do not approve of these kinds of trades, as a rule, but as Mrs. Van derbilt was bound to trade with some one it is better to have the ar rangement made at once than to have Miss Consnelo hawked about all over tho continent. If Vtm Haven't the Money, Yon Cant Pay, Decided the Policeman. A policeman accomplished a delicate piece cf diplomacy the other afternoon at Cathedral parkway and Columbus avenue. Excavations aro in progress there for a new bnilding, and a gang of Italian laborers aro doing the woik un der the eyo of a boss of their own nationality. As the writer approached the spot a young Italian laborer was angrily exchanging words with the foreman. He carried his coat on one arm and over the opposite shoulder was clung his shovel, which he removed and shook in the intensity of his gesticula tion. Snddonly he saw a policeman near by, and he made a dash for the blnecoat and asked for his assistance. The officer camo along with the Ital ian, and the two joined the foreman. The policeman, who was an Irishman some 40 years old, (cro a magisterial air, looked patronizingly and kindly upon the two Italians, who spoke good English, and then he listened gravely to their talo of woo. The boss had dis charged the young fellow on the spot. alleging that he did not do his work satisfactorily. The young man wanted his wages up to date. Tho policeman thought that this was only fair and so told the foreman. "But I haven't tho contractor's money, exclaimed t!io foreman, "uet him ro to tho office Kis time is thoro, and ho'll get his money." Tho policeman looked as wise as an owl, and then turning to tho young Italian ho thus delivered jndgnieut: "Tho bet t thing yon can do i.s to bo to the ofiico nsd get yocr money. If he (pointing to the fnrcncui) r-.iu discharge yon on tho spot, yoa ongbt to get your money on tho spot. Eat, yon tco, the foreman hain't got it." The policeman pave his thumb a jerk toward the street, theyon:ig Italinn took tho hint end with a sorrowful but re signed air started on his mission to the office. "I think my view cf the justice cf tho situation wo.) right," said tho ofli cer a moment later, "bnt how could th9 fellow get his money from a man who didn't have it? Anyhow, I raved a rum pus." So ho did. New York Tribune. "Old Parr'" Tombstone. Bismarck's head, says a correspond ent of L 'Anthropologic, has been care fully measured according to tho rales cf anthropometrics by the sculptor Schaph of Berlin, who made tho statue of Bis marck set np at Cologne. The measure ments prove that Bismarck has a head of extraordinarily large size. Measured horizontally from tho frontal bona to tho oct.-ir.tit tho Lead is 213 millimeters, or more than b'.ootjJ inches. Tho dis tance from tejnplo toteniplo is 1T0 mil limeters, or a trifle ever 6.C3 inches. Bismarck's cranium has a capacity of 1,905 cubic centimeters, and his brain should weigh l.fcCT prams. The-j figures become especially sig nificant when compared w ith tho meas urements of other heads. Of 2,200 heads mea.surod ot Baden Baden only ono ex ceeded 200 millimeters horizontally from front to back, and that ona meivs nred 203 millimeters, cr six millimeters less than Bismarck's. The mean meas nreineiits of 30 members of the Natural Science society at Carkjrnke were 195 millimeters from front to back by 1S5 millimeters from temple to templo. Tho biggest cf these heads measured 205 by 1C2 millimeters. The cubic measure ment of 245 German bends was nearly 500 cubic centimeters under Bismarck's, whilo tho estimated weight of Bis marck's brain is SD per cent above that of the average adult European brain. In fact, Bismarck is a man not only of blued and iroii. bnt ns well cf brains. He Knew Her I'erfcctly.
