In tho oast judicial business is transact ed at the city or palace gates. One story says that tbe sultan of Bagdad put in the portal of his palace a piece of sacred black stone of Mecca, thus making bis Sate the porte. Another Fays that Sultan Orkhan built a gorgeoup gate to bis place in Broussa. Both of those stories aro probably untrue so far as tbey pur port to explain the name as applied to tho Turkish government. Just as tho British court is called tbe court of St. James and tho late French court that of tbe Tuileries, because their head quarters were in the palaces of St James and tbe Tnileries respectively, so the Turkish court got the nanio sublime porte because its headquarters were in the palace of Bab-i-Humaynu, or the Lofty Gate, in Constantinople. The name has been attached to tho building in that city which shelters tho four prin cipal departments of the government. New York Sun. Ladlea' Aaxlltary Katettalne.
