Gov. Morton evidently holds to
the theory that the way to a man's
political feelings is through his stom

boom at a dinner at which wine as

which has been Hying the name of

It is surprising with what positive
earnestness the republicans announce
on every possible occasion that John
P. Altgeld will not be a candidate for
reelection for the ollice of governor of
Illinois. They even pursue him to
Hot Springs, where he is seeking rest
and recuperation, and there have him
reassert the assurance. But Gov.
Altgeld will bo kept right where he

The people of the United States do
not want any more republicans in the
white house, but the people of Illi

there, and only in this emergency
by putting forth Col. William R,
Morrison. This they have about de
tcrmined to do.
There are republicans in Illinois
who scout at the idea of Matt S. ljuay
for president. They saj he is noth

accurate parallel in their own state.

to the republican nomination for
governor of Illinois, like Quay, was
once formerly treasurer of bis own
state where he got his start in poli

political machiuery of his state, and
again like Quay he holds it in a vice

that should only be attained by men

Tanaer BubatdlMa Cook County.
The Cook county republican con

on schedule time, and in 15 minutes
after the machine made delegates had
assembled at Battery V, taey had
completed their work according to
Tanner and Hertz. The former was

for state treasurer. The machine
ran over all opposed to it, made ao
comments on Cnllom because it was
feared that such a reference would
arouse the inspiration of the Merlin
ley crowd. As the Times-Herald
says: "No detail planned by the
bosses was neglected; none was con
demned or criticised. - There was
harmony with a vengeance. The
delegates came to do what the bosses
said they should do, and when the
bosses winked they nodded. They
nominated everyone on the ticket by
acclamation. They cast 666 votes of
a possible 558 for Tanner as candidate
for governor. They put Hertz on a
higher pinnacle of triumph than Tan
ner and went on record for bim to the
fullest extent 558 strong, the entire
membership of the convention.
They selected the "right" kind of
delegates to the state convention.
They manned the county central
committee with all the old machine
hands and they chuckled over the
harmony of it all."
I he effect of the Cook county dec
laration will be to practically settle
the aspect of affairs in republican
politics throughout the state, ine
professional politician has the situa
tion within his grasp. Tanner and
Hertz will be nominated, and those
who may have thought differently
and opposed such a condition will
now climb into the band wagon and
fall over each other to do so.
