The dissertation, to the indulgence of which the Union glTea Iteelf com pletely orer this morning, is charac terized ohieflr by the ravines of a distracted mind, and the deviations from the truth which are plainly discernible in aome of the instances are probably excnsable on that ac count. The points wherein referenoe is maae to the interest ana corre spondence of one Walter Johnson in the postoffioe fight, and to the knldnggery in republican manipu lation in the Interest of Carse, may probably be taken for granted, but the diatribe about The Argus article of last evening In . disclosing the antics of the anti-' 'corner" element having a motive to promote the can didacy of any applicant for the post offioe ia purely nosh. Ths Asgus simply published the maneuvers of the antl- "corner" wing of the party, which the editor of the Union, it is painfully apparent, takes entirely to himselL He is the whole thing as far as the opposition to "the corner" is concerned, the consolidated can didate, as he puts it this morning. wnue ihi abgcs aia not either mention or think of Mr. Johnson in the statement to which anoh violent exception is taken, it is aeensed of having for its main statement that "Walter John son and his friends soneht to delav the selection of a postmaster by Mr. ranee.-- xnen ionows a confession on the part of the aforesaid Mr. Johnson, of how he bad induced Mayor Knox to write for him to Mr. Prince, and how he had written him self, all asking him to hurry up with his appointment. This being the fact, and Mr. Johnson imaeinintr that he is the only oyster in the soup oesiae "ine corner," concinaea that no importunities went to Washing, ton from Rock Island cautioninsr de lay on the part of Prince until after me spring primaries. Much to the contrary, however, the facts were as given in last night's Abgds. The edi tor of the Union should post himself before preparing his next exposition of the workings of the inner cirele. and in jnstioe to the "Thomas crowd" it should be said that Thb Argus is under no obligations to It for in formation of a political character such as the Union alludes. to. Th "Cor t-Mad OaadMaU. After unburdening himself, the editor of the morning paper gives way 10 me nigniy entertaining spec tacle of trying to show that while Carse was nominated finally through ireacnery practiced on iienneay in the Sixth ward by Searle and McCon- ochie, both of "the corner crowd," the emulation of "the tricksters" of which republicans, the Union in the same connection says, despise," the same Carse is not alter all a oornernmade candidate. In other words, it maintains that he was a big ger man aown town tnan "the cor ner," out was nominatea by decep tion practiced by the corner crowd" in the Sixth ward, and then it seeks to smooth over the friction In the party by declaring that all trne re publicans should vote for this fraud ulently-made corner-contracted" candidate. But the most unreasonable and in consistent portion of the Union's article is the attack on ex-Mayor Me- dtll, which is as unprovoked as it is maliciously false in every particular. The comparison, however, which the Union invites between the adminis trations of Medill and Carse cannot fail to .prove advantageous to Mr. Medill. His administration was clean, honest, public-spirited and straightforward; indeed was one of tne most ciatinenisnea in an tae points mentioned in the city's his tory. There were no irregularities, there was no skulduggery to dis grace his administration, ana his direction of affairs was not marked by indifference as to what .was going on. When Candidate Cane stalked into the city hall this morning those who saw him concluded that he was fol lowing out his peculiar assurances. and taking a mental inventory of the surroundings, preparatory to taking hold after election. The ex-mayor haa aa idea that the nomination meant election, a failing he showed ia the convention tnat nominated him, but thin morning's errand waa of another nature. The candidate was seeking an interview with Mayor Knox and he got it. The exchange of compliment took place ia the mavor's private office, and the cres- ent executive was equal to the altus tion. An Ashland, Wis., special to The Pio neer Press says: It is reported that numerous lives were lost in the great blizzard that swept the shore of Lake Superior Thursday night. The storm came front the northwest, piling the ice 150 feet high on the Apostle Islands and other points on the south shore of the lake. The snow, already four feet on tbe level in the extreme northern 'Wis consin pineries, is now six inches deep er, and it is estimated that the loss to loggers by the deep snow is $250,000. Blocked trains are unusual in heavily timbered regions, and this is the first time this winter that trains have been blockaded. The Omaha freight that leaves Ashland at 7:30 p. m. only suc ceeded in getting aa far aa Drummond, thirty miles away. "Scooted" Eleven Miles aa Haw. The Bayfield "Scoot" yesterday waa an hour going eleven miles. On the Northwestern all the trains had double headers. It is Impossible for en gines to make steam, the anow putting tne ores out and stopping the trains at times. The St. Paul, Minneapolis and Ashland railroad was unable to haul logs. A large crew of men is at work clearing the tracks. The Wisconsin Central was seven hours late. It had on a double-header and the engines were covered with snow. The snow in the streets of Ashland is from four to six feet deep, and reports from the Min nesota to the Michigan state line, and for from seventy-five to 100 miles south of Lake Superior, are to tbe effect that the snow is from three to four eet deep. It is reported that five men from Bay City are on the ice yet and have been carried out with the floe. Tbe wind has shifted to the northwest and will prob ably bring the ice back. It is very cold. About S400 worth of nets and twenty shanties were carried out from the set tlement near here. The Ice floated oft in ten floes. When the ice struck Lone Tree and Madison Islands the men upon it were rescued from shore.
