"As to the custom aid rales em ployed by this company in hiring its help," said J. P. Weyerhanser. vice president ana general manager of the Uock Island Lumber and Manu facturing company, in reply to an inqiiry made by an Argus represen tative relative to the charges made by some of the yard men, that dis crimination had been made in t'.o rn&tter of the employment of Daven port men, all employes are hired by the seven foremen of tbe various departments. No distinction is made S3 to color, nationality, politi cal or religious convict on 3 or placo of residence. The only requirements are willingness and ability to do good service. Those doing contract work hire whom they please, but with them, as with the foremen, it is undersiood that it is the desire of tbe company to employ residents of this city as much as possible, acd in the winter time to give the married men the preference. All cf the of fice and foremen are hired by the month, others by the hour. No promises ate made by this company that employment will be given em ployes from year to year, nor do em ployes agree to serve from year to year- Am ts uesldtncr. Macb Interest In the Election Basalts Small Work Tbe Betarns. There has cot been a time in Eock Island's history before when a mu nicipal election has been attended by more interest than is manitested to day. In all the wards a large vote is be ing polled. The extent of the desper ation to which the machine republi can a are driven has been shown dur ing the day in the systematic underhanded attempts to create prejudice against Mr. Medill, and through misrepresentation to turn votes against him at the last moment. This was the last resort of the defeated, and cun ning as were the schemes devised to turn, the tide, they were apparently all unavailing. "Every indication points to a veritable landslide for Medill and his associates on the ticket. The prospects also are the oesi ioc me township ticket as well as for the aldermanic candidates in tbe different wards, and the outloook is that heretofore republican strong holds will return democratic major ities as well as conncilmen. Realizing the unusual interest in the election, the democratic city-to wn sbip committee has engaged the va cant s.oreroom in the Rock Island iionte block opposite The Argus office, and where The Akgus returns from tbe election will be displayed this evening. Just after he had procured the poison Mrs. Lee and another colored woman came to the drug store. They were told on inquiry what Lee had bought. They became greatly excited, i-ee rushed for the door.
