A great crowd gathered on the wharves and the San Lazaro littoral with many ladies in carriages and on the roofs of adjoining houses to witness the vessels depart and to cheer them. The Spanish vessels be gan the combat by firing at the Amer icans, already far away on the horizon. The Americans returned the fire, but withdrew still further, the Spanish ves sels following them until all were lost to view. The Spanish ships continued to fire, but the Americans declined to fight them. At 6 o'clock in the evening two Spanish launches left the harbor to scout over the area cf firing and were not troubled by any American ves sels. At a quarter past 7 the Spanish warshirs returned to the harbor and were hailed with enthusiasm. It is be lieved that one of the American vessels suffered damage and was towed out o! the combat.
