Complete returns will not be in for 24 hours. Republicans have a large majority in the legislature which this winter elects a United States senator to succeed White. Denver, Nov. 9. The entire fusion ticket was elected by 50,000. The leg islature is overwhelmingly fusion. Milwaukee, Nov. 9. Returns re ceived, though far from complete, in dicate that Gov. Scoiield, republican, was re-elected by fully 20,000. Re- ubucans elect congressmen in every istrict except the Second, which is still in doubt. The legislature is over whelmingly republican. Topeka. Nov. 8. The election in Kansas is in doubt this morning, both bides claiming the state by a small majority. It will probably require the complete returns to decide the re sult. Lincoln, Neb., Nov. 9. Returns this morning continue to indicate that Nebraska has turned a complete somersault and landed in the republi can column. Indications are that llayward, republican, carries the state by over 4.000. Conservative in dications are that the legislature is republican on joint ballot. Cam pa u. chairman of the Democratic state com mittee, concedes the re-election of Gov ernor Pingree by a plurality of perhaps 60.000. The Democratic committee Is much perplexed to account as to where the big Pingree vote came from, since it Is known that he was heavily cut by leaders of his own party, and that In several localities where he met this sort of opposition he ran particularly well. Chairman Campau declined to make a formal statement on the re sults until the causes become more evi dent. General Arthur F. Marsh, chairman of the Republican state committee, gave the following statement to the Asso ciated Press: "The official count will give Governor Pingree a plurality of 100.OC0, a gain of over 16.000. The legislatures-ill be strongly Republican. The Democratic state committee does not concede defeat. The governor ran several hundred ahead of his ticket In Detroit, and ran op a plurality of 2.000 in Grand Rapids. Scattering re turns from precincts In Indianapolis and Marion county indicate that the Democrats have carried the city and county. This secures Bailey's (Dem.) election to congress over Overstreet (Rep.), the present Incumbent, and sev en Democratic members of the legisla ture instead of seven Republicans, the present Incumbents. wanasn, ma., xsov. 9. DEMOCRATS CONCEDE OHIO. Republicans Claim a Plurality of from B3.000 to TO oua Columbus O., Nov. 9. Chairman Daugherty. of the Republican state ex ecutive committee, has this to say "Ohio has given a plurality to the Re publican state ticket of from 55.000 to 70.000. and elected fifteen Republican congressmen, who will s-jpport the mag nificent administration of President Mo- Kinley. Ohio probably gives a greater increased ngnrality than any otherstate In the Union In support of the present national administration." Chairman Daugherty sent similar messages to President McKinley and Senctors For- aker and Hanna. Scattering pre cinct returns Indicate a political sur prise in Nebraska, inasmuch as they forecast the almost certain election of Hayward (Rep.) for governor by a plurality of net less than 3,000. This will Le a reversal of the verdict of 1SS6 by nearly 15.0C0- Republican legislative candidates are running ahead of Hay ward. Lincoln, Neb.. Nov. 9. Chairman Slaughter, of the Republican state committee, says: "We have elected the entire Republican ticket by pluralities of not less than 3.0C0, and possibly to exceed 3.C00. We will have a majority of the legislature on Joint ballot, ana will elect a Republican United States senator to succeed Senator Allen. We have elected three congressmen and probably four of the six." The fusion committee made no state ment further than to insist that they had carried the state and legislature. One hundred and thirty-two precincts outside of Lincoln and Omaha show a net Republican gain of 2,132. Lincoln and Lancaster counties show a Repub lican gain (estimated) of 00. Chairman Slaughter says the average Republican gain to the precinct is ten. A gain of six to the precinct would mean Repub lican success. Omaha. Nov. 9. EOTII PARTIES CLAIM WISCONSIN. Republicans Confident Thnt the State lias Gone for Their Ticket, Milwaukee, Nov. 9. National Demo cratic Committeeman E. C. Wall report3 that thirty-seven counties in the state so far heard from give Scofleld (Rep.) 10,000 plurality for governor, but ex pects further returns to wipe out these figures. The returns are far from being com plete, but enough have been received to make the Republicans claim the elec tion of the entire state ticket by at least 20.000 plurality and a legislature overwhelmingly Republican. The Milwaukee county ticket has probably gone Republican with the ex ception of sheriff, which seems to be long to the Democrats. REPUBLICAN BY OO.OOO. What Is Claimed by the Leaders the Hawkeye State. Des Moines, la.. Nov. 9. The "good Ight" returns on the state ticket snow Republican majority of 60.000. The to tal number of precincts reported Is 429 out of 1,120. The net loss is 950, or a loss of two votes to the precinct, showing a total Republican falling off of only 6, 000. Des Moines, la.. Nov. 9. The Demo cratic state central committee nas given out the following statement: "We concede the senate to the Repub licans by 25.000. New York, Nov. f. Theodore Roose velt. Republican, late colonel of the First United Stated volunteer cavalry. has been elected governor of this state by a plurality anywhere from 18,000 to 20,000. All Colonel Roosevelt's asso ciates on the Republican state ticket are probaly elected with him. The re turns both from Greater New York and from the counties putside of this mu nicipality are Incomplete, but enough have been recelved.to indicate a heavy falling off in the jVote up the state. while that In the'dty was well sus talned. The consequence is a falling off in the Republican plurality in the state from 212,000 to the approximated fig ures given above, Outside of Greater New York the vote for Van Wyck is only about one-fifth of one per cent. above that of Porter In 1896. There ap pears to be a loss of four Republican congressmen In the Brooklyn districts. Congressman Quigg, who had a majority oi' about 9,00.0 at the election last year, has been defeated by William Astor Chanler. There is a total Democratic gain cf seven congressmen. Standing of the Legislature. Enough returns from assembly dis tricts have been received to show the probable election of eighty Republicans and sixty-one Democrats, with nine districts doubtful or not heard from. Conceding all the latter to the Demo crats, the Republicans will still have a majority of ten In the assembly and fourteen on joint ballot. This computa tion, if borne out by official returns. will mean the election of a Republican to the United States senate in place of Edward Murphy, Jr., Democrat. The state senate will probably stand twen ty-seven Republicans and twenty-throe Democrats. The last senate contained thirty-five Republicans, fourteen Demo crats and one independent. World Gives Roosevelt 30,244. New York. Nov. O.The World (Dem.) gives Roosevelt 20.244 plurality and says the Republicans have a majority in the legislature of thirty-two on Joint bal lot. Greater New York, with seventy- two out 1.513 districts missing, gives Van Wyck (Dem.) 277,143, Roosevelt (Rep.) 200,574; Van Wyck's majority, 76,56!. l In the election f lSttS on a total of 1,423.870 Black (RfP.) had a plurality over Porter, regular Democratic, of 212.991. In Greater New York Black's plurality over Porter was 35.305. The National Democratic candidate for gov ernor received 15.416 votes in the four counties embraced in Greater New York and 20,698 In the state. NEW JERSEY ELECTS VOOKHEES, Republicans Carry the State by a Plu rality of About 12,000. Trenton, N. J., Nov. 9. New Jersey has been carried by the Republicans and Foster M. Voorhees, the Republic an candidate. Is elected governor by about 12,000 plurality. Essex county, which was concededly the fighting ground of both parties has gone Re- . publican by about 5,000 and both houses of the legislature will be Republican. This will insure the-election of a Re publican to succeed James Smith, Jr. (Dem.) in the United States senate. Ex-Congressman John Kean is con ceded to be the choice of the Repub licans as Senator Smith's successor. The Democrats have elected two of the eight congressmen Salmon in the Fourth, and Daly in the Seventh. The senate will stand fourteen Repub licans to seven Pemocrats. Because of the arge ticket and extensive cutting by independent voters the returns from Philadelphia and Pennsylvania are lower than usual. Enough is known. however, to indicate that William A. Stone. Republican, is elected governor by a large plurality. The vote on the legislative ticket in the counties where the Republican opponents of Senator Quay have fused with the Democrats is very close. Masxachusetta In as Csual. Boston, Nov. 9. The Republicans again curried Massachusetts and elected Roger Wolcott governor for the fourth time, as well as the entire state ticket by safe majorities. Nearly 'all interest in the campaign was confined to the Fifth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth con gressional districts, but the Republic ans lost two if not three of their dis tricts. Wol cott was re-elected governor of Mas sachusetts by an increased plurality over last year, the Democrats made sur prising gains in nearly every congres sional district and not only succeeded In increasing Its representation from one to three, but defeated Joseph H. Baltimore, Nov. 9. Returns from more than two-thirds of city indicate theelec tion of Mclntyre Rep.) in the Fourth district and Wachter (Rep.) in the Third. The election of Mudd (Rep.)
