An afternoon or two ago an elderly ronple, evidently from the rnral dis tricts, came into the restanrant and took a seat. They gave, their order and then began to look around. "That's a handsome palm. Floury !" exclaimed the woman, pointing to the largest specimen. "I wonder if it grew that big in here It" 'Of course it didn't," replied the man, with a look of superior wisdom. "It was raided down in Floridy. That's where they all grow, and then they are shipped np here. " Jnt then one of the restanrant's at taches approached the palm with a dumprloth in his hand. Taking hold of one of the leaves he yanked it from the stem and began to rub it vigorously with the cloth. When ho had cleaned the leaf to his satisfaction, he replaced it and pnlled another. By this time "Henry's" face was a study, as was also that of his companion. "I gness that plant didn't grow in Floridy. after all," the woman man aged to whisper. CONTEMPT OF COURT. Down in Kentucky They Show It by Assassinating the Man on Trial. TOM BASEL'S TRAGIC TAHISa OFF. Shot from the Porch of the Sheriffs Bouse. Palling into the Arms ot Bis Wife Said ShettaTt Home Found Later To lie an Armory, One of the Gnn Containing a Freshly Exploded Miell Sequel of a Kentucky Fend. Lexington, Ky., June 12. A special to The Mcrr.ing Herald from Manchester, Ky.. says: Tom Baker, of the Raker Howard feud fame, was assassinated Saturday afternoon while standing in front of the guard tent in the court house yard talking to his wife and son. The shot was fired frcm Sheriff White's home across the street. Daker died in stantly. Fir days the court has been hearing arguments on the motion for change of venue and the motion was granted Saturday, whereupon court ad journed. Fired from the Sheriffs Porch. Tom Baker, the defendant, was still oiit on bail, and as he was leaving the court house with the crowd he was shot dead. Baiter was charged with the murder of Will White, a brother of Sheriff White. The militia immediately surrounded the body of Tom Baker and protected it and his friends, but in do ing so was compe-lled to bring the Gat ling gun and disperse the crowd. As soon as order was restored the militia, with Wiley, Jim Dee and Al Baker, shorn of their arms, left over the moun tain road for Barbourville. where the charges of murdering Burch Stores and Wilson Howard will be tried on a change of venue granted by Judge Cook. TROUBLE NOT AT ALL OVEU. Howard Gang in Possession of Manchester and Exulting Over the Crime. Baker, when shot, was within seventy feet of the assassin, who fired from the porch of Sheriff Beverly White's hou.-e. diagonally across the street. Paker to!d his wife that he was tired, and would stand up for fresh air, and when he did so a bullet pierced his breast. Colonel Williams sour.ded the assembly, and after taking care of the body the bat talion of militia charged White's house. They found the gates locked and the doors barred, but the boys in blue broke the locks and bars and found inside nothing save a stock of Winchester rifles. Upon a careful examination of these guns was found to contain a freshly exploded cartridge, and it is this which sent the leaden missile through the heart of the- frud leader. Sheriff White and ten of his men were later arrested by the troops. John G. White, of Win chester, Ky., accompanied by Hiram Bolin and one Prophet, who figured In the French-Everso'e feud, has gone to the scene, it is alleged, to take the White end of it. As shown by specials and other in formation sent out from London, Ky., the entire basis of activity in the trial of tho Bakers has shifted frcm Man chester to Barbourville where, by rea son of the change of venue, the trial will be held. The troops left Manchester yesterday en route to Barboursville. tak ing Wiley and Jim Baker for trial. They will arrive about noon today. The Baker boys cried for their weapons on leaving. iut were denied them. The trouble id by no means over at Manchester, as the factions seem to be. cementing more closely and a conflict among th f.-iends of those under arrest and their enemies is not improbable. When the troops left Manchester all the Baker people also got out of town. The town remains deserted. None of the families that lied to the hills Satur day night has returned. Reinforcements are coming from the hills to the Whites and Howards, who are in possession of the town. They are exulting fiendish ly over their arch enemy by singingdng gerel at the death of Tom Baker. The; Howards expect an attack, but the Ba kers, since the murder of Tom Baker, have no leader, unless General Garrard, in spite of his great age, should accept that office. Alilast night rifle shots were heard in the outskirts and immediate vicirity of the town, but no casualties have been reported. A dispatch from Barboursville says: Since the change of venue was grar t- d at Manchester, Clay county, fcr the Ba ker murder trials to be held here in the Knox county courts this city has been in a state of exciteme nt. It will b" im possible in this place, which has a popu lation of between 2.0C0 and 3.0(0 inhabi tants, with good officers, fur such a tragedy to occ ur as that at the village of Manchester Saturday under the shadow of the court, when Tom Baker. the principal defendant, was shot cl.-ad while a prisoner of the court. As Tom Baker had killed William White, a brother f Sheriff Beverly White, of ay county, and as the crowd saw the rille fired from a porch of the sheriff's hourc at the time Baker fc-U dead int- the arms of his wife, it is thought that there may be another trial soon for a change of venue to this place.
