Micbigander deems serious blander on the part of the administration, hold ing that the sacrifice of life and monev re too high a price for trade .gains. Senator Burrows maintains, however. that the war should now be fought out to a finish. In the latter respect all should agree with Mm. We should not have gotten into the mixup in the first place, regardless of any trade considerations either way, because it is contrary to our principles as a na tion, but now tbat we are in we must see it through. LATE CROPS NEED RAIN TCESDAT, ALGIST 1. Ix his Colorado exploit, Gov. Tan ner has given notice to all aspiring republicans in Illinois that it is a case of Johnny ret your gun with John Kiley. The Burlington's new depot at Quincy was dedicated with fitting cer emonies yesterday. The company will now turn its attention to its sta tion and terminal facilities at Rock Island- in the execution of the plans neretoiore illustrated in I he auuvs. Booker T. Washington and Mrs. Washington, who are now in London, will sail for home Wednesday next Air. ashington bas made several ad dresses while abroad, including one made before the American University duo in tans, lie also addressed a meeting in London over which Am bassador Cboate presided. The elo quent colored orator made a sensation in London. A democratic newspaper, one loyal to the national platform of lo'Jo, may soon be started in Chicago, col. Wetinore. of St. Louis, is interesting himself in the project, and as he is an energetic man, an advocate of silver, an opponent of trusts and imperialism and the owner of $ 7,000.000 recently received from the trusts for his in terest in the leggett & Meyers To bacco company of St. Louis, some thing may be expected to happen. A Practical Joke. A business man from Baltimore found himself in a peculiar predica ment one day, says the New York Press. lie visits New York about once a month. lie sleeps'witii bis class eve in a tumbler, and there a friend found it one morning. The sight suggested a practical joKe put tne eye in sir. x. s overcoat pocket. Done! When the friend departed, being short of money for the moment, be pawned bis own overcoat for $K. In the afternoon there came an urgent telegram to Mr. X., who had been unable to leave bis room on account of the missing eye and whose frame of mind was all dis torted and warped. The friend frank- 1 . .inf A..nil T 1 1 1 T - - f 1 I 1 ,t jLii, x iuruui, 1 1 umjr as u B i infill: Joke. You will find your eye In your overcoat pocket." But it was not there. "It must be, because I put it there myself," urged the Joker. The coat was held up by the tall and shaken. "By thunder! I wonder if I could have put it In my own coat?" "Where's your coat?" "I've pawned it. I didn't want to borrow and needed a few dollars." "How much is it In for?" "Ten dollars." Mr. X. produced $10 and the coat was redeemed. The eye was In the Inside pocket. He carefully washed it, slip ped it into place and walked out after 12 hours of solitary confinement. Corn la Dolor Well. Especially In North and South Districts. The crop bnlletm for Illinois savs concerning the week ending July 31 The temperature of the week aver- asred from 1 to 2 decrees a day above normal, several days being very hot Rainfall was light over the north half, but increased to more than two inches in counties along the Wabash and Ohio rivers; rain is generally needed, especially in central counties, where late corn is reported firing, pas tures are becoming thin and brown and all late crops are in need of mois ture. Corn generally is doing wen especially in the northern and south ern districts. In the southern dis tricts a good crop in the. early fields is generally assured; in central counties dryness is causing damage, and in some localities worms and chmcb bugs are bad. Wheat and oats thresh ing continue, the former being nearly finished. Oats continue to yield well; haying is completed and the crop has been saved in good condition. Gar dens and late potatoes have been much damaged by dryness, but in the southern districts shipments of vege tables continue heavy; the early po tato crop is generally very good Stock peas are making a line growth; millet is nearlv ready to cut in earlv fields; plowing for wheat continues broom corn is heading rather poorly and late fields are not promising well because of worms; grasshoppers are doing much damage to young clover in central counties. Dryness has injured the apple crop considera bly; blackberries are drying up; grape promise well." FRESH GOLD CROPS. It seems quite probable that Brig. ten. rredcrick Lf. orant will have a chance to show himself the worthv son of a great sire while in the Phil ippines. He is now in command of lien. Ovenshine's brigade during the sickness of that officer, and as those troops are holding the southern line of defense for Manila there may be pfenty of fighting before Uen. Orant returns to this country. (Jen. Crant went to Manila in the transport Sher man, having 1,800 men and 7. otlicers in his command. His previous ser vice in the mild Porto Rico campaign had given no opportunities for him to preve his warlike blood, although he had smelled powder while on his father's stall during the latter years of the war. lie was appointed when 16 years old to West Point military academy. Graduating with high hon ors, he was appointed second lieuten ant of the 4th United States cavalry on June 12, itL this com mand he spent two years on outpost duty and took part in combats with tbe Indians in the far west. lie Was afterward promoted to tbe rank of first lieutenant, and on March 17, 1873, was made aide-de-camp with the rank of lieutenant-colonel on the staff of Lieut. -(Jen. Philip H. Sheridan, who had the active command, under the president, as commander-iu-chief of the armies of the United Slates. ss. Will Defeat the Administration. Senator J. C. Burrows, of Michigan, is alarmed over the situation in the 1 hilippines. in an interview given out yesterday he expresses the fear that a continuance of hostilities will wreck tbe chances of the republicans for success in 1900. It is known that he voices the fear of many of tbe party. He says: "It is my judgment tbat if the war in tbe Philippines is still in progress next year and the end is not then in sight tbe situation will be to the disadvantage of tbe repub lican party. The only hope for the riartv. and the country. I niiirht add. is in a speedy change of the conditions Pure A j?( in tbe Philippines. Unless the war in jst time I made Gr the Philippines speedily ends it will llke. but "sl become an important political factor and its continuance will make the out look, for republican success uncertain to say the least. If I could have bad my way we would have simply tak en a coaling station or a base of sup plies in tbe island of Luzon, we would not hare paid a penny to Spain and we would have our foothold in the east without the sacrifice of life and Odd Thlag-a In Whl.lijr Mnklnfr- "There are lots of queer things about the whisky business," said an expert the other night, "and one of the queer est is the peculiar quality that a dis tillery, for no apparent cause, will lend to Its output. Tho thing has never been explained, but, nevertheless, It'a an undcnlablo fact. I Knew a distiller who sold bis old plant and moved to a more desirable locality, where be tried to put up an exact duplicate. He even went bo far as to smash a couple of windows that happened to bo broken In tbe old establishment, but It was no go; be couldn't make the same kind of whisky to save his souL "This same difficulty has destroyed the usefulness of many a valuable brand. Another singular phenomenon Is the Impossibility of making a good Bonrbon whisky east of Kentucky as a good rye west or tno Aiiegnanies. I speak la 'broad terms. Apparently the feat bas been accomplished a few times, but Investigation bas always developed the fact that tbe makers of pea board Bourbon were of blue grass origin and the chaps who succeeded In turning out an inland rye were aliens from the cast. A real Kentucky colonel will not touch rye. lie considers it almost as deleterious as water." New Orleans Times-Demo crat. State of Ohio, City of Toledo, Lucas County. Frank J. There are several localities where gold may be said to grow every year or, la other words, where fresh depos its of the precious metal are to be found annually. One such district is intbe Edmonton country, in the Canadian northwest. where, after the spring floods, from the same banks and "benches" of the Sas katchewan river there are taken every year considerable quantities of gold by a few diggers, who make their living out of the business. But tbe most conspicuous and Inter esting case of this sort Is to be seen near Ichang, In the province of Uupeh, In China. For many centuries past each year gold bas been washed from the banks of coarse gravel on both sides of the river Ilan, and In the midst of the auriferous district there Is an ancient town called Li-kiu-tien, which means "gold diggers Inn." Its inhabitants subdivide the gold bearing ground among themselves annually. staking out their claims with parti tlons. They pay no royalty and ap pear to earn no more than a bare sub sistence. But this may be doubted, as John Chlnamau Is an adept at "lay In low and say I a nuffln." The annual river floods bring down millions of tons of mud and sand from the mountains, and this mud and sand, which is charged with gold, both "fine" and in flakes, is deposited to a depth of six Inches or more on the banks of gravel. It Is In the winter that -the gold Is washed, and it Is said that sev en men work about 20 tons of "pay dirt" in a. day. Cincinnati Enquirer. The HlKhcat'WlndniHr. They act quickly and pleasantly; they are not bad at all to take and are conveniently pat up in wooden boxes so that you can carry them in yonr pocket and use them wliile at work. You do not have to stop work while using Kid-ne-oids. They have done a great deal of good for a vast number of people here in Rock Island. We have given you the names and addresses of these . people from time to time, and again refer you to George Downing, 909 Seventh ave nne, who bas lived in Rock Island for forty years, and says: - "Two years ago I had a fall and struck my back on a step, injuring it badly. I thought I had cured it en tirely and for several months 1 felt all right, but about a year ago it began to bother me considerably. At first I paid no attention to it, but it became so bad I could'scarcely get about. The lameness was across the small of my back in the region of the kidneys; I took medicine and used ointments of different kinds . externally and also plasters, but none' of them did me any, good whatever. I heard about Morrow's Kid-ne-oids and thought I would give them a trial, although I bad little faith in patent medicine. I got a box at Babnsen's drug store and began to use them as directed. . I be gan to get better in a day or so after taking Kid-ne-oids, and lean say they are the only things I ever tried that gave me any relief. I am convinced that my kidneys were affected, and Morrow's Kid-ne-oids are certainly the thing that will cure kidney trouble." jud-ne-oids lor sale at 60 cents a box at M. F. Bahnsen's drug store.
