M.EEUSER. iTM tzi Ym Kan staff Bag Tells of Necessity for Accommodations for employes of the Roads Who Are Obliged to Spend a Portion of Their Time Away From Home Remarkable Growth of the Movement. A. M. Bruner, the genial secretary of the railroad branch of tbe i. M. C. A. for Illinois, the other day talked to an A kg us reporter about tbe development and prospects of his branch ol the work in this and In other states. "Every railroad man, ana every one else who has given matters pertaining to railroads and their management any thought," said Mr. Bruner, "recognizes the ne cessity for accommoaations for rail road employes who arc compelled to spend a portion of tneir time oil tbe road away from home. The Peoria road here in Bock Island has, within the past few weeks, provided such accommodations for the men who re side in Peoria, but stop here for a period during their runs. These men had formerly slept iu cabooses. in corners of tbe round house, or wherever else they could find a place The compauy has fitted up a comfort able cottage witb ueus ana a reaaing room, aud the men repay the outlay with better service. "There is a rule on most roads for bidding employes entering saloons on pain oi dismissal, thus often barring them out of the only place where they can find any real comfort. The plan adopted by the Peoria road here has been tried by many large roads on an extensive scale, but all such at tempts have ultimately failed either through lack of foresight on The part of the ollicials, or want of cooperation on the part of the men. It was only when the work was taken up by the Y. M. C. A., in whose hands it properly belongs, that a way out of the dimculty was found. The reasons for tbe success of tbe latter are two The association has had more exper ience along tbe necessary lines, ana can devote more time to the develop ment of plans than would be possible lor any set oi railroad omclals. lben. the religious element, while seem inglv so foreign to the makeup of the average railroad man, is in reality a sustaining force. Not a New Work. "The railroad department is not a new one. It has been in existence over twenty vears, but it is only re cently that its real importance has been felt, particularly in tbe western and southern states. Such roads as the New York Central, Grand Trunk. Wabash, Big Four, and many others, indorse the system and encourage the eilorts of the association in this direc tion. The sum of $2 60,000 was ap propriated last year out of corpora tion funds for this purpose, and $60,. 000 of it was put into new buildings There are nine railroad associations in this state, and last year witnessed tbe erection of a large building at Decatur and tbe organization of a membership tberc oi oou men." There is an international secretary The Big Store, The Town Market. The Davenport Fur iture & Carpet Co., 324, 326 and 32S Brady street, show more and better furniture than any place in this west ern market. Davenport Furniture and Carpet Con 131 S3. S?8 Brady St., Davenport. in Chicago who works with State Sec retary Bruner in the establishment of new associations. TLese gentlemen are kept busy investigating conditions and preparing plans for different points as requested by the officials of the roads interested' Last year, in addition to the work done at Decatur, investigations were conducted at Peo ria, Roodhouse and Danville.- At Peoria the work was taken up at tbe instance of the Peoria & Pekin Union company, and plans were sub mitted for the erection of a building at Bridge Junction to cost, with equipment, (13.000. At thif point 600 men would be benefited, and the association proposed to raise $3,000, asking f 10,000 from the company for the erection of the building and $1,800 yearly for its maintenance. At a re cent meeting, the stockholders grant ed all that was asked of them, and work will commence as soon as possi ble. At Roodhouse, after looking into the conditions, at the request of the Chicago & Alton road, a building costing $8,000 was recommended, and is regarded with great favor by the officials. At Danville, where there are 1,200 railroad men, the C. & E. I. road has taken up the matter and a $10,- 000 building will be recommended. Raising the Foods. In cases similar to the above, the association usually asks the corpora tion to furnish three-fourths of the cost of constructiou, the remainder to be contributed by the men or raised bv subscription.. The cost of main tenance is largely defrayed by mem bership fees and a moderate room rent, the balance to be paid from the rail road fuuds. Such institutions are not self-sustaining, as has been shirwn by experience, but it has also been proved tnat a contribution to their support is a profitable investment ou the part of the roads, and in no case has such contribution been discontinued after having been ouee begun. The Chicago, Kock Island & Pacihc road has on its pay rolls in this city 1,200 meu, all centrally located with reference to thejards, and Mr. Bruner believes there is probably no place in tho state where a branch railroad de partment of the Y. M. C. A. is more needed or would be more successful than here in our own Rock Island. A CAME WITH REDSKINS. Kock Island Ball Team Will Probably Open With Nebraska Indians. The warrant for Eastman's arrest was sworn out by Joseph Seidel in Magistrate Stafford's court, from which a change of venue was taken. Seidel is employed by the Rock Island Lumber company. He alleged that Kastman, in order to obtain a gar nishee summons against him, made affidavit that Justice V. F.
