A FINE PICTURE DISPLAY. Art In I'hotojrapby Shown at the UUkilea Studio. The display of pictures from the most noted photographers of the United States, on exhibition this week at the Blakslee studio, brings to Rock Island some of the choicest work of the country. Those; who regard photography merely as a mechanical process will discover here that it has been raised to an art requiring the same skill and judgment and ability as that of one who makes portraits with the brush. On entering the art room the first pictures to claim attention are three large carbons by Moore & btephenson. of Atlanta, oa. Ihe pert society girl; the college professor and the hard- headed business man are so liie-like, one almost expects to hear them speak. I his exhibit took the hrst prize at the national convention at Milwaukee this summer. Next to these two large flashlight pictures, 'Spring and Autumn, bv the Guer- sen College of Photography, St. Louis, claim most attention. Few are ready to credit the fact that such softness and detail can be secured by llash light. The platinum prints f elderly people from the famous Mrauss studio. of St. Louis, are much admired and visitors turn to them again and again. All details of dress and ngure are simply suggested and tho face alone claims attention. Morrison, of Chicago, famous for his portraits of theatrical people, has three carbon panels which are the ad miration of the ladies, ihey are also convention prize winners. Ihe Leed Drv l'lale companv has some handsome three-quarter length ictures, showing much skill in hand ling the diapenes. , Rough, of trreensburg, l'a., shows a velox print of a colonial dame, much talked about lor us peculiar lighting. Ihe celeron medallions from the American Aristotype company are a unique and entirely new style of finish, showirg the grain of oak, maple and curly birch about the oval pictures. Prints from taulk, of New 101k, and Hayes, of Detroit, are included in this collection. Steffins, of Chicago, has some rich platinnms in black and sepia, and Mr. Bartlett, cf Chicago, shows four prints in the now much talked of gum bichromate process, one of which, "The Young Mother," has been on exhibition at Paris this summer, sent by special request of the American commissioner.' "At the Spring," a platinum print on Japa nese rice paper, won the gold meuai at Vienna The Blakslee studio is represented by a variety of work in various styles, platinum and carbon being prominent. Mrs. Blakslcc's water colors and medallions,- on ivory and porcelain, have also proved of much interest. The exhibition will be continued this evening from 7:30 to 10 o'clock, tnd those who have not already availed thenlselves of the opportunity should take time to see the collection.
