THI3 AEQ-US, MONDAY. APBIIi 8. 1901. EASTER SUNDAY DULY OBSERVED Churches Celebrate End of Lent With Impressive Special Services. EATUBDATS FOBECiST VERIFIED - ! Heavens Fail to Weep and Old Sol Bathes the Earth in a Flood of Radiance. The skies wore an ominous frown yesterday morning and mortals trem bled in dire apprehension. Bat as the day wore on spots of bine ap peared on the horizon. They grew nearer and more numerous till finally the sun broke forth in' a broad smile at the perturbation his erratic courso hadcaus-d. From this time till sun set he played peek-a-boo behind big white cumulus curtains, the latter disappearing at nightfall ancT leaving the stars in radiant possession, of the heavens. Not a drop of rain fell here, but it is not entirely reassuring to learn that there was a respectable shower at Peoria. So if the fag ends of that city's seven Sundays of wetness occa sionally drift this way we must accept them with the best possible grace. The beautiful afternoon brought out many gorgeous triumphs of the tail or's and milliner's art and the streets presented a very animated appearance till well into the evening. The north wind, however, was rather chilly and many ware constrained to cling to their winter garb a week or so longer out of regard for their physical wel fare. Ia the Churches. All the churches observed Easter in some manner, the Catholic ceremonies, of course, being the most elaborate. Grand music marked the day at Sacred Heart, at St. Mary's and St. Joseph's churches. At the First Methodist church the morning numbers were rendered by the regular choir and Sunday school, while in the evening the Jubilee sing ers gave the congregation a rare treat. At the First Baptist church Mrs. Thomas Casey and Miss Josephine Wooiin sang in the evening with line effect. A cantata entitled "He Is Risen" by a chorus of 40 Sunday school chil dren was the feature of the evening services at the Broad way Fresbyterian church. Knights Templar Service. At Trinity Episcopal the prin cipal service was that for the Knights Templar, of Davenport and Rock Is land, at 3 in.,1 the afternoon. The Knights were in full uniform and the sermon and music were of the most impressive character. VEATHR WE MAY HAVE Fair tonight and prob ably Tuesday; but little change in temperature. J. AT.
