O. if we could have had only two of those 22 hits we made off Killain up at Uoekford last wet i to sand wich in just wh;-n we needed them yesterday! Then we should have shown the champions a different sort of a chase. Two hits at the right time would at least have lied the score. Hut Killain yesterday and Killain last week appear to hav; been two very different sorts of individuals. Four hits were our portion yesterday and they came one at a time when they accomplished nothing. Worthy of Our Stwl. Although Kock Inland patrons of the game are opposed on general principles to losing there is no team in the league to whom they can see a ga.mr dropped with better grace than Uoekford. Manager Xicols surely has a hunch that can hit the hall, run bases, and even field a bit on :i pinch. Although Killain's pitching was responsible for the locals inabil ity to get anmnd the bases, the team liehfad him played like big leaguers. Mut it was not to be thought for an instant that Rock Island suffered in the comparison. Donnelly's men. although the manager himself was not in the game, played with the usual snap ami ginger and gave their opponents never an inch. Although two errors were laid up against the locals. Miller lid not deserve his ami neither one cost anything. The visit ors earned their two runs by a judic ious application of the willow. Whfr the ICnna Cam. Uockford"s pair were brought in the fifth inning in this wise: Killain was first up and he drove a liner into Milton's hands so hard the latter could not have dropped if he had tritd. Lippert hit to short and beat the ball, as usual, and when Hines knocked a grounder to Shcltou he again beat it to second. Hill then threw to catch 1 lines at first and O'Rotirke. although off the sack, touched the runner before he got there but Mesmer did not see it that way. Then Conklin hit to left field and LipjM. rt scored. Hines was nipped at third. I'.eulow followed with a smashing 2-bagger and the other run crossed the plate. Hock Island hail men on third in the second, third and ninth innings. Score: ROCKFORD A. II. II. II. I. A. E. That was a nice piece of headwork in the first inning when Williams and Milton deliberately gave I'attison a pass, fdling the bases wtih two men out, staked their chances on Kruger's inability to hit, and won. Milton pitched a steady game. He gave but one man a base involuntar ily. The incorrigible enthusiasts of Davenport continue to come to Uock Island to see good ball and to abuse Mesmer. Louie Lippert has the hearts of the (iermans from over the creek. Al though caught at second once yester day he found an opportunity to re peat his common performance of stealing second aud third in succes sion. Many protests sire heard against the practice of bunting, yet a bunt by Shelton in the ninth yesterday might have tied the score, for with the infield playing in (Jraliam's line out to second would probably hac neen a hit good for two runs. Not a few are inclined to attribute yesterday's defeat largely to the fact that (. L. Bruner. of Taylor Hidge, was not at his post in the bleachers. The Champions defeated the Elm Street boys by a score of 7 to .". Manager Donnelly, who has not been in his usual health for several davs past, owinjr to au attack of a mild form of malaria, was taken ill yesterday just as the game began and was compelled to go home and to bed. CIRCUSES ARE NOT ALL ALIKE Some May Kesenil'le Oilier, lint the Wal lace Show Dlllers I'ruin All. The old saying: "If you see one circus you see them all," is no longer true. There is only one Wallace Show. It is in a class bv itself, dif ferent from all other circuses. Many books fail to leave any impressjon upon their readers, and many shows fail to give a performance which is remembered by its patroius. Not so with the Wallace Shows, which ex hibit in Rock Island on Saturday, June 21. The minute the Wallace Show is mentioned to any one who has seen it. there immediately crowds into that person's mind a score of prominent features. Menially he sees again the finest horses in the world, the handsomest cages, the fat, healthy and well-rounded animals and the drove of loo Shetland ponies. Then he remembers the entrancing and charmingly played music by Professor Bronson's Military band, the mysterious rolling globe, the statuary, the Slirk family, the amus ing trained razor-back pigs, trained pigeons, dogs, monkeys and ele phants and last he will very vividly recall the only and exciting genuine races ever put 011 under canvas. The ladies always remember the splendid anil handsome costumes of ihe per formers. The people riot only con sider the Wallace Shows the highest class circus in the world; but they think so. Exchanges received from cities where the Wallace Shows have been exhibiting the past ten days all agree that the Wallace Show is grander and better this season than ever before. Saved Fmra an Awful Fate. "Everybody said I had consump tion." writes Mrs. A. M. Shields, of Chainbersburg.
