"Rip Van Winkle. worthless, grace less, lovable old vagabond, with his ever ready laugh, with his trouble and the pathos of his perplexity, brings Thomas Jefferson, the son of a famous father, to the Illinois theatre Saturday, matinee and night. The names of Jef ferson and "Rip Van Winkle" are al most synonymous, as for nearly half a century one has stood for the other. and the playgoers of today are just as much in love with the quaint old vaga bond. Rip. as were our mothers and even our grandmothers in the past. That "Rip Van Winkle" has endured so many years is a guarantee of its worth. Many people are disposed to find fault with the moral tone of it. saying that such a worthless, drunken old tramp as "Rip Van Winkle" should be held in abhorrance instead of arous ing admiration and sympathy, but such practical people forget that they arc not seeing a reality, but only a poetic romance, a legend of the Hudson river, and the Katskill mountains. "Rip Van Winkle" Is a character so full of sym pathy and childish good humor that we feel more like condoning "his bad qualities like a naughty child than judging him with the cold-blooded jus lice that we are in the habit of meeting out to stage characters in our usual criticisms. "Uncle Josh is Coming. The attraction at the Illinois Sunday evening will be the very reliable "Un cle Josh Perkins." It serves a distinct and most highly commendable purpose. for it teaches In the cleverest and most entertaining way imaginable and in a thoroughly up-to-date manner the truth of the old saying, that "love will find a way." The chief Interest in the piece centers in the love of Uncle Josh for his young daughter Nan. The entire cast of "Uncle Josh Perkins" has been well selected. The piece is eleborately staged, and and equipped with beauti ful scenery. Both Love Same Girl. "Silas Toner" and '..im Pennell" in The Village Postmaster." which come3 to the Illinois tomorrow evening, are faithful reproductions of the two young husky farm Jiands. in the town of W . in western New Hampshire. Both In love with the same girl, who doesn't know which to take. She says: "Neither of 'em's good for much," but they are good in the play. Aerial Ballet Work is Fatal. Pittsburg. Pa.. Dec. 15.
