IN A BLOODY BOW John Looney and Officer Charles Sexton Mix in Court Room. LOONEY'S NOSE BATTERED Viciously Attacks Mayor McCaskrin and Mayor Olson Asks That Mc Caskrin and Sexton Be Fined. A disgraceful row occurred in Justico McFarlane's court this afternoon with John Looney as a center. Looney came out of it with a badly bleeding nose, and then posed as a martyr, and asked that Mayor McCaskrin and (isicer Charles Sexton be fined for contempt of court. This matter oes over until after the trial of the case which brought on the rouble. Officer Dr It The case over which the trouble arose was that of the people vs. Effie Vauphn. chanced with robbery, wh!ch was taken before Justice McFarlane on a change of venue. It was contin ued until this afternoon, when it was dismissed upon motion. Mayor Mc Caskrin. who is acting as chief of po l'e, ordered an officer to take charge if the defendant until another com plaint could be made out and sworn to. John Looney, who, with B. F. Schriver, was appearing for the defend ant, attempted a bulldozing game with the apparent purpose of getting the woman out of court after her dismis sal. There was bad blood between lyooney and Officer Sexton, and it was the more aggravating to Looney be cause Sexton was the officer in charge. Mayor McCaskrin requested Looney to desist and then ordered the officer to take charge of him. Tins brought the two together. Sexton was assaulted by Ixjoney 'and then he went after his as sailant and struck him several times on the nose. Arc S r it n rated. Other officers were in the court and succeeded in separating the two men, and they almost got together a couple of times after that. Jeremiah looney appeared on the scene in a few min utes and tried to calm his brother, and fimilly the second warrant was herved on the colored woman. Waota t ntmi( t'lnc. Cpon order being restored in the court room, Looney having had the blood washed from his face, Justice Mc Farlane ordered the trial to proceed, Loney arose and asked that Mayor McCaskrin and OHict-r Charles Sexton be fined for contempt of court. It was here he made his pose as a martyr, maintaining that he had bf;n held by two other officers while Policeman Sex ton struck him. He bitterly attacked Mayor McCaskrin and the officer, also indulging in abuse of Mayor Olson of Moline, who was acting as state's attor ney in the absence of Mr. Scott and his assistant, L. M. Magill. ( r iif lifihltrry. The case in question is one for al leged robbery. There are colored dives in the city of Rock Island which the mayor has been attempting to clean up, and Magistrate Elliott has been lacking on penalties that were intend ed to drive them from the city. Ist night, upon complaint of John McLaughlin, driver of an ice wagon, Mrs. Hoyd McDonald and Effie Vaughn were arrested and taken to the sta tion. McLaughlin was directed to these women, who live in the vicinity of Twenty second street, he says, to se cure a washwoman, his wife being ill. He was talking to them, and in some way, whether they got into a scufflt or not is not known, he asserts they rob bed him of some money. He was also struck with a bottle which he had in his iockeL Two Arrr-mt r-tV The wagon and officers went to the lioiie where Mclaughlin said they en teretl and admittance was refused. The lock was broken and the officers took Mrs. McDonald into custody. At the station she was identified as one of the women, but McLaughlin could not tell whether she was the one who took the money or not. She was given a hearing after midnight and bound over to the srrand jury by Magistrate Elliott. The witness had to return home on account of the ilhfess of his wife and the Vaughn case was continued until this morning when. Loney and Schriv er were secured as attorneys, and took the change of venue. Effle Vaughn was secured after McDonald found that his wife was implicated, he revealing where she was.
