THE AT1GUS. WEDNESDAY, OCTOHER 11, 1005. MANY HEAP. HANNA Boston Man Addresses Large Audience on Christian Science. MAN OF CHURCH AND STATE Subject of Disccurse, "Christian Sci ence, the Religion of Bible" Teachings and Practices. Judge Septimus J. Hanna of Ilosron addressed a large audience at the Illi nois theater last evening on "Christian Science, the Religion of the Bible." The speaker was introduced by George Shel don, of this city, who In a few words told of Jitelgc 11 an n;i'.s prominent lositjin in church and civic affair:;. The speaker, after a few introductory remarks, gave a de tailed discourse on the church he re-pre-HE!f, its teachings and practices. His address ia part, tullows: Ladies and Gentlemen. I assume that tin r- are some- here who are un familiar -.ith Christian Science some, who have come for the first time to hear of it. I will address myself in part to these. 1 therefore say that Christian Science lias a text-hook en titled !, nee and Health with Ke to the S'-r ipt uri s." and its author is the ilev. In short, it is a spirit ual interpretation of the bible; hence its title: "Key to the Scriptures." ii tti or. The author of a book of note and value is a p rson of whom people de sire to know, then-fore I shall refer briefly to the life and character of Mrs. Kddy. It may not be amiss for Hie to say that for nearly ten years, us former flr.-t reader in the mother church in Hoston :tid editor of the offi cial periodicals, 1 have had opportuni ties which (liable ni to speak intelli gently of her life and character .is well s of her labors and literary attain ments. Speaking from this vantage ground. I can truthfully say that, intellectually, i-he is one of tli" most alert persons I have e( r known; that she labors in cessantly and unselfishly for the cause to which she has devoted her life, and that, notwithstanding In r years, she" perforins an amount of labor each day which, if known, would seem incredi ble, even if elme by one yet in the adolescence of life. (hun-h irarli, I sluil; next speak of the church tends. There is in Boston a mother church, organised a number of years tdnrc. having a membership of nearly o.emet, composed of persons residing In almost every part of this country nnel of other countries. This member ship is increasing at the rate of about .S.tKio annually. The mother church has branch churches and societies to the number of marly one thousand, also s'tuated in nearly every part of this country and of other countries. Some years since the mother church adopted a set of church tenets. These become also the tenets of all of her branches, and must be subscribed to anil adopted by ( very p rson becoming a member cither of the mother church or of any of he r branches. These tenets furnish a fair index to the religious faith or be lief of this movement, hence 1 shall ref r to them in substance. They ac Vnnwledge Christ and his divinity, and declare there i;-. but one Christ. They inculcate the omnipotence, omnipres ence mi:l omniscience of God: that God is spirit; that man the real, spiritual man is made in the image and like ness of tiod according to the teaching of Gem sis. and that this real man must, by the necessity of his rela Conviction Follows Trial When buyinpr loose coffee or anything your procer happens to hare in his bin. hOW do you knOW What YOU 2TO getting ? The last of these tenets enjoins upon all who subscribe to them the neces sity of striving, watching and praying to have in themselves the same mind that was also in Christ Jesus, to love one another, and to be meek, merciful, just and pure. Surely there can be no higher stand ard of Christianity. If there be a per son on this earth today who can truly be said to have in himself the same mind that was also in Christ Jesus, that person is a Christian. If there arc persons who are sincerely striving watching and praying to have . that mind, they are, in that sense, leading the Christian life. Those Christian Scientists who are thus earnestly striv ing are true to the church tenets and to their teaching. If there are those who are not so striving, they, like all others, have yet to attain to a higher btandard of living. Script urnl llanin. The foregoing indicates, in general terms, the Christianity of our faith. No unbiased mind will say that, in statement and theory, it does not em brace all the essentials of bible teach ing: but let its be more specific. Ail who believe in God at all agree that He is all-powerful, all-present, all-wise. All who believe in the bible accept the statement of the first chapter of Gene--is that God made man in His own image and likeness. We s houid endeav or to give- these bible truths their full weight, their deep significance?. If we do so. we must believe that with God all things are possible. We must be lieve that if God is whole : ...re and likeness retlects whoh-.u - UY must believe" t hi t if God is. pure, it is image and likeness reflects purity. We must believe that if God is good. His image and like-ncs3 reflects good ness. We must believe that if God is Love, His image and likeness rellects love. We must believe that if God is life. His image and likeness reflects life. We must believe that if God. in His wholeness, is free from sin, sick ness and death. His image and likeness is likewise free. Otherwise the words "in. age and likeness" were false and meaningless a misnomer. A full be lief in the first chapter of Genesis, which is the record of the true-, spirit ual creation, puts upon us the necessity of recognizing Got! as tiu only creator of man. and man as the i tea ire and likeness of his creator foreve r and for ever. Jt-MiiM Trm-hioK- The old testament teachings, as in dicated by the few citations made, fur nish an abundant foundation for the new testament doctrine of healing through the divine law. and especially the teaching and works of Jesus. I might quote extensively from the new- testament did time permit, but I shall confine the quotations to the sayingj and precepts of the founder of the Christian religion. This should be suf ficient authority for every professing Christian. Jesus sent forth his 12 disciples to preach and to heal the sick. He gave them a commandment, called by some bible commentators his great commis sion. In Matthew 10th. this command ment is thus recorded: "Go not into the way of Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not; b::t g rather to t!i lost sheep of the house of Israel. "And as ye go preach, saying. The kingdom of heaven is at hand. "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils; freely ye have received, freely give. "Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses. "Nor ye t sc rip for your journey neither twe coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat." This commandment is a unit. It is not two commandments. There is in this language no warrant for any at tempt to separate the? commandment by declaring that the part relating to preaching was to be perpetuated, but the p:rt relating to healing the sick was to be put aside, as having refer ence oniy to the time in which, and Coffee, COFFEE READY FOR Their New Store -., PLENTY The Old Reliable 214 W. Even if. fe.r the sake of argument, the kind oft pr aching mentioned in the command-j n.ent hail been practiced, and a pres ent Mngdoni of heaven had lieen preached, we yet maintain that the part relating to healing sickness is as p!,- In and imperative as that pert lining to preaching. We should thus main tain if we rested the question alone up on t!u words I have quoted; but we are not compelled to elo this. After his resurrection and just before his asee nsion Jesus gave to the same dis ciples to whom he gave his first great commandment (excepting Judas Isca riot who had betrayed him) a final commandment. This constitutes the two last verses of the book of Mat thew: "Co ye therefore, and teach all na tions, baptiz!ng thrm in the name of V fitter, and of the son. and of the holy ghesf. "Teaching them to ebserve all things whatsoever 1 have commanded you: ; nd. lo. I am with you alway, even un ;o the end of the world." I jib sua Be llroatl. Thin language is broad and unquali fied. It comprehends all the command ments previemsly given to his disciple s, and this of course, includes his first great commandment. It is a plain and unmistakable direction or instruct iem. 1 t nie plainly ask: When was it ever repealed, countermanded, qualified, or changed in any manner, by Jesus or any e-ne else of those having biblical authority to teach or preach? Where is the record thereof? We declare therefore, on the most explicit biblical authority, that the part of the great ce'mn.andment relating to healing the si k was as imperative as that pertain ing to preeaching. Healing sickness is. then, an essential indispensable part of Christ's gospel. No right exists for the effort to put aside Jesus command ment to heal the sick and to heal ac cording to his teachings and his meth ods of healing. The same divine pow er tbat healed in Jesus' lime heals to lay. o far as It is understood and practiced. There is but one truth, and that truth is eternal, unchangeable.
