Alderman Smith offered a substitute that no action be taken on ordinance for the present. Lost, 11 to 2 (Holz hammer and Smith). The ordinance was then adopted by unanimous vote.' Alderman McNealy. offered a resolu tion, instructing plumbing inspector to place catch basins at Third avenue and Twenty-fourth street. Adopted. Alderman McNealy offered a resolu tion instructing street commissioner to close Thirtieth street from Fifth to Seventh avenues till repairs can be made. Carried. AUerman McNealy offered a resolu tion authorizing the health and police committee to purchase equipment for dragging water for drowned bodies. Adopted. Alderman McNealy offered a resolu: tion that brick work for city in future be done by union labor. Carried. Alderman Lawler read report of board of local improvements recom mending improvement of Thirty-ninth street from Eleventh to Fourteenth avenues, and Eleventh avenue from Thirty-ninth to Fortieth street, by lay ing water main?: also city engineer's estimate of cost of said improvement at 12,243. Alderman Iawler offered a . resolu tion thai . city engineer's estimate . of cost'. of said improvement is a just and reasonable one and same be adopted. Adopted. Alderman Lawler submitted an ordi nance for improvement of Thirty-ninth street . from Eleventh to Fourteenth avenue, and Eleventh avenue from Thirty-ninth to Fortieth street, by lay ing water mains, and moved its immedi- ate consideration. All the newB all theiime The Argna. 3r RAIN NEEDED IN SOUTH; TOO MUCH IN THE NORTH Past Week in Illinois Characterized by Wide Variation in Precipitation Warmer Than Normal. The Illinois .weather bulletin sum mary for the week ending June 1 fol lows: The weather conditions were some what more favorable than during the past three weeks. The high tempera tures of the previous week were con tinued until the 31st when a decided fall occurred. The mean temperature for the week was 3 degrees above formal, the extremes being 4S de grees and 95 degrees. The rainfall, mostly in the form of thundershow ers, was deficient in. the central and the southern districts, and excessive in the northern district. High winds, with damaging effects in some places,, occurred on the 28th. Except in the northern district, there was more bright sunshine than during the previ ous week.
