J '": ! .- if-' v ... ' v- THE ARGUS. MONDAY," DECEMBER M l, 1908. S18 IS NOT ENOUGH Couple in Play "Paid in Full," Failed to Get bn Successfully .' - on Income. DRAMA SEEN AT ILLINOIS Though Story is Full of Surprises it is of Absorbing Interest and Points a Moral. Eugene Walters showed an intricate knowledge of domestic economy, as well as an understanding of hutian nature when he wrote the piay. "Paid in Full," which' was presented at the Illinois theater last evening. At th? same time he disregarded the usual custom of leaving everybody happy at the finale. , It is made to appear that getting on In New York city on $18 per week is quite a different proposition from what the majority of writers in the essay contest conducted by The Argus which closed Friday evening appear to re gard the same achievement in Rock Island. At the same time, the moral which one must infer, is that with sufficient economy and fortitude it could be done even in New York, , at least till the head of the house se cured a "raise." While there were no stars In the AMTJ8EMENT8. rjURTis 0 DAVENPORT. PERA MOUSE ii company that played here last' eyen-j Ing, all the seven people in theicast were competent and -well "fitted to the parts. T. C. Cooke took the part" ot Joseph Brooks, collector for the Latin American Steamship , company, who naa marnea - a aeucateiy nurtured though sensible -girl, impersonated by Catherine Proctor. Albert Andres ap peared in the role of cheerful' Jim Smith, who divided the honors as hero with Frank Burton, taking, the part of Captain Williams, president of the Latin-American company, and employ er of both Brooks and Smith. These four are the actors in all the heavy scenes. -Mr. and Mrs. Brooks are trying to get along on $18 per and are making a" sad showing. Smith, who was an unsuccessful suitor for the hand of Mrs. Brooks, is a close friend of the pair, and is the referee, mediator and adviser when trouble arises. Brooks the Villain. Brooks shews up bad from the start, but remains honest till, after being taunted by his vain mother-in-law and sister-in-law, he appropriates money belonging to the firm to take his wife to the theater. Having made a start, he goes in deeper and deeper, playing the races in a vain effort to recoup, till he has taken over $16,000. Then comes discovery, and, under the' pressure of circumstances he shows hi3 real character by requestin his wife to go to his employer, whom he believes an admirer of hers, and barter for his Immunity. The wife, for the sake of her name, performs , her part, keeps her honor, uncovers a gem in the rough in the captain, whose reputation has been none the best, and then leaves her husband after a dramatic scene. While there arc disappointments and surprises in the play, it is exceed ingly interesting. A return engage ment is booked for Jan. 22.
