Last evening 260 members of the congregation of Broadway Presbyter ian church assembled in the Sunday school rooms In annual meeting. A fine supper was served by the ladies of the church. Tables were arranged in the lower Sunday school rooms and those who attended were seated ac cording to initial of their last name. After the supper Dr. W. S. Marquis called the meeting to order. Dr. J. W. Stewart was chosen as chairman and A. D. Sperry as secre tary. Reports were submitted by the presidents and superintendents of all separate organizations within the church and South Park chapeL All the reports showed that splendid work was being done. R. C. Smedley, sec retary of the Y. M. C. A., was called upon for a report from his organiza tion, Bhowing the work done by mem bers of Broadway in the association. His report indicated that Broadway was doing a little more than the av erage. The report of the church treas urer, Joseph McCrory, showed that for benevolences, such as home and for The.' The re ports from South Park indicated that exceptionally splendid work was be ing done by the small congregation of the chapeL Every organization show ed splendid growth and that all branch es of the church work were being sup ported. Elders Had TnutMi Reelected. The terms of three of the elders, S. D. Cleland. William Parks and Dr. A. H. McCandless, ended this year. All were unanimously reelected. The terms of three trustees, Major C. W. Hawes, Joseph McCrory and William Parks, also expired, and all were unan imously reelected. A new pledge system was adopted to be used for the mission collections and pledges, instead of the old benev olent pledge card in vogue since 1884. Dr. Marquis recently received a let ter from Rev. Graham Lee, missionary to Korea from Broadway church, in which Dr. Lee states that it has been necessary for him to discontinue his work for a year at least. He is now enroute to his home here from the mission field with his family. His health is extremely poor and he will spend his time here for recuperation. As this was the last congregational meeting before the departure of Dr. Marquis and family for Europe, the family were bidden God-speed upon their journey by the congregation. On the Wrong Back. CLOSING THE GAP Promised That the Bock Island Southern Will Be Completed in Three Weeks. THROUGH FREIGHT SERVICE Will Be Established Between This City and Monmouth Passenger Trains Running July 1. A. E. Walsh of the Rock Island Southern stated today that in three weeks the line from this city through to Monmouth -will be connected up and that steam trains for freight traffic will be put in operation immediate ly after this . is accomplished. Tha road began Its building operations at both ends of the line and there now remains a distance of six miles to connect up .with track. Material is on hand "for this last stretch and the work is being pushed as fast as pos sible. The company will have 80 miles of track in operation, Mr. Walsh states, before the summer is over. This includes the line to Aledo from Gilchrist.' By July 1 the company expects to have the road electrified complete and to establish passenger service. The power house at the Edwards riv e,r is being delayed somewhat on ac count of the failure . of the whole salers to fill the orders of the Walsh people for electrical equipment. They state, however, that this will be in place by the date which has been set for the opening. How Are Tber to Get Into City? Mr. Walsh does not say how the company expects to get its electric trains into Rock Island. The steam trains are taken care of by the agree ment with the Rock Island road, but as yet the company has secured no franchise for tracks for the electric coaches. City Chat , LUCK. The United States steamer Coal Bluff arrived here this morning at 8 o'clock from winter quarters at the Keokuk boat yards. This is the first government boat to arrive from the yards at Keokuk this season.
