THE SEW ROCK ISI.AXIi COINTY OFFICERS. Probate Judge Benjamin S. Bell, Moline. Probate clerk John Rinck, Rock Is land. County Judge Robert W. Olmsted, Rock Island. County Clerk Henry B. Hubbard, Rock Island. Sheriff O. L. Bruner, Rock Island. County Treasurer William H. Whiteside, JosMn. County Superintendent of Schools Samuel J. Ferguson, Rock Island. Not to exceed two-thirds of the nor- ir.al vote of" Rock Island county was cast at the election of yesterday, when the whole republican ticket, with the exception of Henry B. Wheelan, can didate for reelection as minority rep resentative, was victorious. The total vote on congressional candidates in Rock Island county two years ago was 12,7C(i. Yesterday it was approximate ly 8,000. In view of the interest it was sup posed had been aroused on the con test for the shrievalty political proph ets were confident of bringing out th? full strength of the vote in the county. The falling off chiefly is credited to the republican party, and a variety of reasons are suggested, but just which one swayed the great number who re mained away from the polls is not definitely ventured. It may have been that many of the party faith could not consistently support their own candi dates, and rather than desert their party colors, permitted their inactiv ity to serve as a silent rebuke to con ditions that were subjects of popular complaint. ' Hmnrr Can Thank Himself. Mr. Bruner can attribute his elec tion by the comfortable majority that he received to his personal popularity and aggressiveness. He had been campaigning four years steadily, and before that, in fact. It was the under standing when he withdrew in favor of the nomination of Edward Kittilsen in 19iC he was to have a clear field so far as the party organization was con cerned this year. The organization made good its promise. Mr. Bruner from the outset had not allowed the steam that he had put behind his can didacy to cool: neither did he permit his friends to do so. He was on their trail day and night. In every move and thought he had both his eyes fo cused on the single goal the shrieval ty. And he won. Stnnd! on it in Own Hceorit. Mr. Donovan simply stood upon t record as a citizen and former county official. He promised sane enforce ment of the laws .that would govern him in the event of his election. He promised certain reforms because per Linally he did not approve of the moral looseness that has prevailed in the city of Rock Island the pert few years. There was every reason to be lieve that he shared the views of the majority of citizens. Whether this be so or not is a question. However, the vote indicates that Mr. Bruner is the choice of the people for sheriff. So far as known, Mr. Bruner made no promises during his campaign; that is promises pertaining to the conduct of his cffiee. Mr. Donovan has the satisfaction of knowing he was supported by the best class of voters; and they all felt had he been successful he would have done as he promised, as they know him as a man of his word. The vote which Mr. Donovan was given in the city of Rock Island and the country districts was a disappoint ment to him and his friends. Moline did what it was expected it would do. The total vote in Rock Island for Mr. Donovan was 1C95 to 1925 for Mr. Bruner; in Moline the figures were 7o2 to 1017, and in the country SS5 to lor.s. In South Rock Island, where Mr. j Donovan resides, he carried both pre- j cincts. He also carried, in the city of Rock Island, the second of the Sec ond, the second of the Third, the sec ond of the Fifth, the first of the Sev enth; lost all of the precincts in Mo line, and carried Cordova and Anda lusia. Easy for Remainder. There were enough straight repub :ican votes cast to carry through the remainder of the republican county tick ei. Mr. Ferguson, candidate for reelection as superintendent of schools was unopposed by a democratic nomi-aation. In speaking of The Argus' special Associated Press news service, which received so many expressions of praise last night, and to which allusion was made in the election editions, The Ar gus neglected to mention one essen tial element in the facilities that were peculiar to this paper. That was the personal attention given to the tel egraphic end by H. E. Huffington, the local manager for the Postal company. From 4:30 yesterday afternoon until midnight, Mr. Huffington sat at the instrument in The Argus teleg.-nph room and received with lightning-like rapidity the string of bulletins that came direct from the equally swift op erator in the Associated Press tele graph rooms in Colonel C. S. Diehl's Chicago headquarters. Mr. Huffington made good at this end of the wire, as did the Associated Press at the starting point, and he had his regular service and a number of special elections loops to look after in the bargain. H. Miller, Twenty-second street and Third avenue, might have been burned to the ground and the horses, three in number, would have perished. As it was, the railroad men were in the vicinity to secure something which would quench their thirst, and as they passed the hospital on their re turn to the yards, saw a blaze within the building. They called the fire department. The department re sponded at once and in order to gain entrance had to break down one of the doors. It was found that a gal vanized iron bucket, containing ker osene soaked rag3 with a mattress covering it. had been ignited. The smoke had not become thick pnnneh before the arrival of the department to Injure the horses. The bucket, contents and mattress, were carried from the building. There was no damage. All of Door Locked. It is believed some one placed the bucket and contents in the buildijig for the purpose of destroying the property. Just how and when en trance was affected is not known. Democratic Legislative and County Tickets Carry With Exception of Nominee for Auditor. Charles Criik. the young Daven port attorney, is defeated for con gress in tho Second Iowa district by I. R. Pepper, democrat, of Musca tine, by a plurality of 2.500. -Criik was nominated to succeed Congress man A. F. Dawson. Grille stood as a progressive re publican, although, it is stated, th." many of the members of his party did not feel that he took a suffici ently positive position on Cannon ism and tho tariff. This vote went to Pepper, who conducted an ag gressive democratic campaign sim ilar to (hat of C. II. Tavenner here. Mr. Pepper is county attorney at Muscatine. There is much speculation among republicans of the Second Iowa dis trict as to the effect the speech of last week by Colonel Roosevelt had upon the candidacy of Mr. ilrllk. Republicans freely say that the col onel did not help their candidate for congress. One Republican Saved. With one exception, the entire democratic legislative and county ticket carried in Scott county anil the district. Ed Collins, republi can nominee for reelection as county auditor, was the one candidate of hia party who was saved. His dem ocratic opponent was Alban Hart man. Party lines. Judging by the vote, were obliterated on this office. A. A. Balluff was reelected state sen ator; H. II. Prince, republican, haw been reelected by a plurality of be tween 300 and 400 votes over A. K. Pergland, but the vote that came In from the missing precincts this morning apparently changed the re sult. Prince, whose home is In Galesburg, carried Knox, Henry and Fulton counties. Pergland carried Schuyler and Aaauis counties, but lost his home county, Henry. Berg land made a remarkable run, re ducing the pluralities by which Prince had won in former cam paigns to a point where the official returns may yet give the democratic candidate a lighting chance. Local interest attaches to tho congres-viopal election in the Fif teenth district frorn the f;:ct that Rock Island formerly was a part of that district pnrt both Mr. Prin-c and .Judge Fr rgJand are well knov :i here.
