DEPRECATE LOSS
OF DR. MARQUIS
'Ministerial Alliance Meets and
Draws Resolutions Asking
For Retention.
DESIGNATED AS A LEADER
Removal to Another Charge Would
Be in the Nature of Calamity
to the City.
The Ministerial alliance at Its
meeting In the T. M. C. A. this morn
ing, passed resolutions deprecating
the proposed removal of Dr. W. S.
Marquis from the pastorate of the
Eroadway Presbyterian church, in
which he Is praised for his efforts
to uplift the community, and in
which it is stated that his removal
from the city would be an irrepara
ble loss. A committee, consisting of
Rev. T. E. Xewland of the First
Methodist chnrch and Rev. H. W.
Reed of the First Baptist church was
appointed to present the resolutions
to the presbytery at their meeting,
at which the question will be decided.
(A I.I. IT A CALAMITY.
The resolutions follow:
Whereas, Creditable information is
at hand which causes the gravest ap
prehension relative to" the continu
ance of the pastoral relation between
Dr. W. S. Marquis and the Broad
way Presbyterian church of this city,
and,
Whereas. The worth and work of
Dr. Marquis have not only been ef
fective in the building up of a
strong congregation, but have exert
ed a commanding influence in the
city, and.
Whereas, In all progressive move
ments for the moral and spiritual
benefit of our city Dr. Marquis has
always been vitally related, and his
intense earnestness, readily blazing
Into enthusiasm, has made him a
leader among ub;
Therefore be it resolved. That we
should deplore his removal from us
at this time as little short of a ca
lamity, and together with all good
citizens we sincerely hope that the
prayer of the" congregation may be
granted and the pastoral relation be
sustained.
Practically the only other business
transacted at the meeting was the
adoption of the report of the pro
gram committee for the year.
KKKI.S II K IS )VEi;iKI.
That his presence is necessary in
his present charge to complete a work
which has been instituted in one of
the important branches of Broadway
Presby terian church, and that his re
moval from here would be a detri
ment to the plan under way, was the
statement of Dr. W. 8. Marquis, pastor

of Broadway Presbyterian church, yes
terday morning at the regular service.
His statement was made because of
the meeting of Rock River presbytery
held at the church this afternoon for
the purpose of considering the demand
of the synod of Illinois that he take
up duties as superintendent of a benev
olence campaign lnthe state.
rORXISG JfEW CHtacii.
Dr. Marquis said that at the present
time the South Park chapel, one of the
branches of the Broadway church, la
about to become an independent insti
tution and is to sever lta connection
with the mother church within a short
time. That is one of the Important
reasons why he desires to remain
here. He has worked, along with the
chapel organization, since the chapel
was organized and the congregation
has worked with him. Since Rev. "W.
G. Oglevee, assistant Broadway pas
tor, came to Rock island, the growth
of the chapel has become more pro
nounced. It is one of the most pro
gressive of the younger church institu
tions in Rock Island and now plans
are forming to make it a church in
Itself.
Then, too, there are many things in
progress in Broadway church which
need Dr. Marquis' help to carry
through. The church has reached a
critical period In its life and & change
would be unwelcome.
COMMITTEE GIVES VIEWS.
Armed with dozens of reasons to
keep the pastor here, the committee
appointed by the congregation a week
ago yesterday to aprear before the
presbytcrial body, entered into the
meeting this afternoon. To offset the
pleas of the local congregation, the
synod has a committee here to give to
the governing body an outline of the
work which it intends to do and show
why they have chosen the local pastor
to do it.
IS IP TO PRESBYTERY.
It was In the month of September
that the synod voted the office of su
perintendent of benevolences to Dr.
Marquis over his protest He refused
to present the matter to his congrega
tion, and the synod appointed a com
mittee to neet with the presbytery,
for that body has the power of severing
pastoral relations with a church and
transferring the pastor to another'
charge. It was for that reason that
Dr. Marquis and Broadway session de
cided that it would be best for the
congregation to appoint a committee
to appear before the presbytery at the
same time. In addition to members of
the committee, there were present at
the meeting several members of the
congregation, including members of
the Men's class.
Delegates from some of the SG
churclif-s of the presbytery of Rock
river arrived this morning. They in
clude pastors and one elder from each
church. Many of the churches were
not represented.
