John eon, commissioner of accounts and finance, found himself supporting a heavy load yesterday. The weight of the city rested on bis shoulders. With these officials absent from the city, Mr. Johnson was mayor pro tern, and at the head of the police and fire departments. Runaways Caught. A trip to this city In a cattle car and the disillu sioning of their hopes of making a fortune of peddling bills in Davenport at $1.50 a day, were all the world that two runaway waifs from Chicago cared to see. Yesterday mor.iing at the police station they declared them selves ready to return to the tubercu losis department of the Cook county hospital at Oak Forest and endure the ill treatment which they claim as their reason for having run away from the Institution Vhere they had been patients for the last three months. Names and addresses given the po lice are Roy McCarthy, 1231 Ada street, and William Pranksy, 1520 Fi lerton avenue, both of Qiicago. Roy gave his age aa 14 and that of his com panion 13. Both, especially William, look considerably younger. Roy has the appearance of being a rugged and healthy chap though, according to his story, he Is listed at the hospital as having but one lung.
