their annual session today in Moline !
at the Salem Lutheran church. The t
meeting is to end tonight. The prin-!
cipal business of the day was the '
awarding of the next convention to !
Xew "Windsor. It was also decided to i
call upon the Lutheran conference of
the state to give its support to Trinity
Lutheran church of Moline, which is
a new church and as yet not self-supporting.
Dismissed from charges of wife
abandonment and then promptly re
arrested, was the fate of Ralph D.
Martin of Moline this morning in the
county court. Martin is the young
man who eloped with his nurse, mar
ried her and then later set up the
claim that undue influence had been
exerted on him when he was ill and
partly out of his mind.
The hearing of the case started
Monday and the state finished this
morning, whereupon the defendant's
attorney, W. A. Weld, filed a motion
to instruct for the defendant on the
grounds that the court here had no
jurisdiction as at the time the case
was started by former State's Attor
ney L. M. MagilL the complaining
witness was in Louisiana. The rale of
the court sustained the motion.
Then followed an impromptu vaude
ville which amused a courtroom full
of Interested spectators.
Mrs. Martin approached her es
tranged husband and asked him to be
reconciled and to take her back. He
refused and walked away. She fol
lowed him and round and round a ta
ble they went, she entreating him to
take her back and he refusing.
This action furnished the founda
tion for a charge of re-abandonment
and while the young man walked
away from his wife, a new charge
was sworn out against him and he
was re-arrested. The new case will
come up for hearing sometime next
week probably.
