"When the defendants were put on

both claimed that Frank, who worked
with them on the Rock river during
the ice season, bad induced the men to
hire a rig in Davenport and go to
Milan for the purpose of securing the
harness in question: that Frank made
the trip by street car. meeting his j.als
in Mila'n. where they turned the rig
over to Frank, who went after the
booty, and on his return with the same
turned the rig over to the two men
again, taking the car for Davenport.
"Did you see Frank again?" ask
ed the state's attorney.
"I did not," responded Howard.

will go to Morrison. 111., to attend an
adjourned meeting of Rock River pres
bytery, which will be held Monday.
At this time he will be received as a
member of the Rock River presbytery
and preparations will be made for his
reception and installation as pastor of
the local church.
Relieved of Charge,
The congregation at Fond du Lac.
Wis., which Rev. Mr. Wilson is now
serving, has granted his request that
he be relieved of that charge and the
i presbytery of which the congregation j
is a memoer dissolved the pastoral re
lationship and gave him a letter of
dismissal to the presbytery of Rock
River.

ing tipping and the taking of tips an
indictable offense has passed the sen
ate committee of the whole practically
without opposition. The bill, when in
troduced, excited much ridicule. It
seems certain now to pass the senate
and he sent to the house committee for
concurrence. The bill makes it an of
fense punishable by a line of $100 to
give or take a tip and make? the em
ployer equally liable to the fine.

Promises to Be Good After Second
Arrest Following ' Attempt to
Plead His Own Case.
A sequel to the troubles of Mr. and
Mrs. Herman Totmeyer who reside
on Thirty-fifth street, near Fourteenth
avenue, occurred this morning, when
the former appeared in police court
again to face charges made by his
wife. However, this time, after much
talk, the woman decided to bury the
hatchet and give her husband a new
chance.
It will be recalled that yesterday
morning. Mrs. Totmeyer, with the as
sistance of Police Magistrate Smith,
practically forced Totmeyer to "come
across" with ail his money but a quar
ter, and he was released from the city
jail after having been warned not to
go near his wlfe."s home.
Called a Cop.
I-ast eveuiiig, however, he wandered
towards his former domicile and hov
ered about the outside until he became
brave enough to go in. Here he prom
ised his wife to do better, but instead
of heeding his pleas, she called an offi
cer, and Totmeyer was incarcerated
in the jail.
With the assistance of the police
magistrate this morning, the troubles
were brought to an end, for the time
being at least, and Totmeyer and his
wife went ou their way rejoicing.

Robert Sheldon this morning in po
lice court plead for the mercy of the)
police magistrate for himself and wife,
when they faced a charge of vagrancy.
They had been released from the coun
ty jail only two weeks ago, having
served a 40-day sentence on a charge
of disorderly conduct. 1
Sheldon .promised to leave town
with his wife, and never to bother the
Rock Island police again. His pleas
fe'.l on deaf ears, however, and each
was fined $50 and costs, in default of
which they were sentenced to the coun
ty jail for ten days. ,
Sheldon .and his wife are charged
with having caused a disturbance on
Fourth avenue near Fifteenth street
last evening. Captain Kramer.;, and
Officer Joseph Frankhauser arrested
the two. Mrs. Sheldon resisted arrest,
and quite a large crowd followed -the
two to the police station.
Sheldon, it will be recalled. Is al
leged to have tried to escape from the
county jail when serving his last sen
tence there by jumping from a window
of the bastile. '
