This Investment al most put the company into bankruptcy. affiant In the presence of said Camp bell wrote said names on a sheet of paper, and that this affiant then and there Informed said Campbell that there -would not be a single foot of watermain or sewer laid in front of the premises above stated at the ex pense of the city to prevent a fight on annexation of any territory while this affiant was mayor. And that said Campbell then and there said: "This is our tritimatum and if we don't get what we want we will fight." That thereupon the said Campbell said to this affiant: "Mr. Mayor, at one time I tried to have the territory where I lire annexed to the city of Rock Is land and failed. Peterson and John Law, the two men arrested 10 days ago In the rooming house of Mrs. B. Baker, cor ner of Twenty-second street and Third avenue, resulted in the dismissal of the case against Mrs. Baker. On a charge of conducting a disorderly house, before Justice of the Peace Carl Kuehl this morning. Late yesterday afternoon, learning that Peterson and Law, the two prin cipal witnesses for the state, were not as yet subpoenaed. Assistant State'B Attorney A. C. Edwards, who Is at tending to the state's end of the case. filed information in county court charging. Mrs. Baker with operating a house of ill-fame. It will be recalled that in the early morning of Sunday May 24, Peterson and Law were arrested by Officer John Berry In the rooming house. Mrs. Baker was also taken into custody and on the day following the three were given a hearing In police court. Law and Peterson were allowed to go on payment of ligJt fines, and being strangers here Immediately left town. Mrs. Baker was fined $50 and costs on a charge of conducting a house of disorderly conduct, but refused to pay, claiming that the charges made against her were untrue. Attorney George McCaskrin, representing her, filed an appeal to the county court. Chief of Police Brlnn and Magis trate Smith then held a conference and a state warrant was sworn out against her. A continuance in the state case was taken until today, in order to give the officials time to locate and subpoena Law and Peterson. They could not be found, however, and when Attorney Edwards learned this yester day afternoon, he filed the informa tion against the woman in county court. Two Cases In County Court. Mrs. Baker now faces two charges. both of which are in county court. The information filed will hold until the two men can be located, and while no particular effort will be made to get Law and Peterson, yet should they ever return to Rock Island, the sub poenas will be served and the case will be taken up by the court. Enghauser of Rock Inland was the victim .of a robbery staged at the carnival grounds In Davenport Monday night, when a "dip" snatched her handbag containing a silver dollar, a small amount of change and some valuable papers. Mrs. Enghauser was walking among the tents, when she was Jostled in the crowd and her handbag was torn from her grasp. She barely caught a glimpse of the man as he took to his heels, and shouted for help. The thief succeeded in making his getaway, however.' Sane Fourth for Gotham. New York. June 3. The men took the advice offered, and at the conclusion of the case Charles a treed to pay his brother Edward $4 and become sole owner of the skiff. Edward Bledsoe was arrested some time ago on a warrant issued by As sistant State's Attorney Edwards, on complaint of Charles Bledsoe. T'ae ciiarge was the larceny of a skiff. Sims returned to his work at the Alden Coal company store at Xorris, Sunday, after a 10 days' vacation with relatives here. Mrs. Sims will remain until after the commencement of the public schools. Fred and Harley Bond of Stuart, Iowa, were here the fore part of the week arranging the affairs of their deceased brother, Walter Bend.. B. L. Christy was appointed administrator of the estate. Rev. As a result of Rock Island's refusal to take charge of the regatta it is pos sible that there will be none held this year. Officers of the .association are to the teachers and a few invited friends. A setting of 24 egg had been made. It was the first addition to the feath- I ered tribe at the park this year. The ducklings always prove a delight to the ' children of the city, and it is expected, that the little tots will all want to take a trip to the scenic spot and watch the maneuvers of the new arrivals. George Washington Beard was born Jan. 20, lSi9, in Muskingum county, Ohio, and died at Viola May 2'. aged t;5 years, 2 months and 20 days. He was the eighth child of Jacob and Su san Beard. He leaves to mourn eight brothers and sisters. July 4, 1S71. he was married in Platte county, Missouri, to Mary Branaman. To this union 14 children were born, two of whom died in Infancy. The famiry removed to Illinois in 1S73. The funeral services were held from the M. E. church Fri day morning. May 22, the pastor. Rev. B. R. Xesbit, officiating. The inter ment was in the Viola cemetery. Two sons. Charles and Sam Beard of Al bany, Mo., arrived Friday morning for the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Beard. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bateman and Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Peters of Aledo were out of town relatives who were present at the funeral. Messrs. Fred and E. R. Frazier left Tuesday for Chicago to be present at the funeral of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Higgins. who were drowned In the drainage canal near Lamrmt May 19. Funeral services were held Wednes day afternoon at Rose Hill chapel, and the liodies were laid In the beautiful Rose Hill cemetery. Mrs. Homer Mead of Aledo stopped SEVERAL OIL WELLS ARE V, PRODUCING NEAR MACOMB Half a dozen wells have now been opened in the Colmer oil field near Macomb in the lower end of this con gressional district. The latest, known as the McFaddeii well, is said to be ths best of all. Pumps have been set' at work at the first wells opened and storage tanks are being filled. It i3 the desire to test their producing ca pacity as soon as possible in order to know how far to go in preparations-" for utilizing and extending the field.
