Sighting tho Sardines.
The shoals of sardines appear smo
denly along the Breton coast in June.
They come by millions, and the watif
takes on a slaty tint froai their pre--ence
beneath the surface. This phe-f
nomenon is awaited intently by tlious-
ands of fishermen ,and when the cry
of "Here they are!" goes up there ie ;
as much excitement as Is occasioned
by the whaler's shout of "Thar she
blows!" Each boat carries from three "
to a dozen nets. Cod roi is cast out
as bait, and the averpge catch Is
about 4,000 each casting of the net.
When first drawn from their element
the sardines glitter like jewe's, reflect
ing many colors, but they soon loe
their brilliant tints. Kvt ry village
along the coast has its cannery, and.
as these are mostly individ'unl enteri
prises, there is much competition. The
sardine fisherman who !oe3 not own
a boat of his own seldom mikes ovr
1,000 francs, or about J0O, from his
labor of five or six months, and in bad
seasons his earnings arc;- much less
than that. :
