HOT DEBATE OVER LOCATING BOXES City Commission Has Warm Argument Over Police Alarm System. SEPARATE BIDS ORDERED Finally Decide to Ask Figures 01 Wir ing. Installation and on Complete Job. The council spent several hours this jnornir.p. and were scheduled to meet at 3 o'clock this afternoon, in an at tempt to locate the police alarm boxes, sad reach an agreement upon the method of advert it-ins for bids. Fo'.'iowinic a heated session .of the council yesterday afternoon, when yaycr Srhrivcr and Commissioner Archie Hart entered into a contro versy over the method of advertising, it was found wise to first locate the places for the alarm boxes and then discuss the other matters later. The city clerk has already advertised for bids for the boxes. But the bone of contention started yesterday afternoon Mayor Schriver offered a resolution providing for the advertising for an over-all bid. one Mch would include the Installation of boxes and the aerial wiring, so that the system would be ready for use. Hart Oppose It. Commissioner Hart fought it des perately. He argued at great length, claiming that it was robbing local men of the work. Mayor JFchriver answer ed this by stating that local contract ors would bid upon the job and that even if the contract was swarded to an outside firm that the aerial work would hkely be done by local men, either the company subletting the con tract or else sending a foreman here who would employ local men. Then the mayor changed the ordi nance, authorizing City Clerk Rudgren to advertise for the work under three separate ciasi::cations. The first was for the wiring, the second for the boxes and their installation, and the third was the overall, for the wiring, installation and boxes. Then the que.-tion of how much wir ing was needed was brought up. and finally after arguing the matter for over an hour the council decided so meet This morning at 9 to go over the specifications, fnd out whether aerial or underground wiring was needed, and how much, so that intelligent bids could be secured. At the meeting this morning the council made but little proeress. It is checking up on the location of the ! boxes and when this is done, will J likely advertise under three separate j classifications.
