form an important item in the farming com
munity, and lor market purposes am prob
ably mora exteutively raised ia thia oootitj
than any other farm animal. Generally the
took of twine in this county is fair, and
equal to the average throughout the State.
To iome extent, it u eafo to lay, very tope
rior tpeoineut, and of belt breeds, may
found, but ia the aggregate we have resoo
to think the breeding and rearing of choice
and valuable varieties have col received
uch attention and special car among our
fanners as it needed, or as could be made
profitable. The Society would be glad to
see the somewhat noted twine family eleva
ted aud improved in quality and character
by the judioiout aduiture,ot more arisio
oratio blood.
1'OILTRY
ha never' made so much as even a credit
able exhibition at our county fair, always
lacking greatly in both variety and qaality.
We invite espeoial attention to the number
and kinds enumerated in the premium list
(which might easily be enlarged with other
varieties well known among poulterers,
amateurs and professionals), and then re
spectfully suggest that a pair of aged
bhaiighais, a tew Dorkings, aud a coop of
common fowls are not the samples of poul
try we might reasonably expect from a
cultivated taste among curly hoaied lads
and rosy cheeked lasses who bunt hens nests
and feed the ohickens, nor frjtn persons of
tnalurer years who aim at profit or good
management. We hope the young people
of this county will interest themselves in
ascertaining what beautiful, as well as use
ful, varieties of fowls are to be found within
easy reach, and that thev will never rest
satisfied until they can show at our fairs as
fine and attractive specimens as are fonnd
any where.
Tilt FLORAL DEPARTMENT
should bo a graceful and appropriate reflex
ot elegance, relinement, aud artistic taste.
The cultivation of flowers is everywhere
regarded as peculiarly a lady like employ
ment, suitable alike to the humble and the
opulent, and eijually engaging to the busy
band of toil and the possessors of elegaut
iiesure. Flowers Bymboltze a love of the
beautiful, and the adornment of the Floral
Hall with rare and beautiful specimens will
be one of the most pleasing and agreeable
features of the fair, and a source of more
than ordinary gratification to those who
contribute to its embelishnient. This depart
ment boing under the superutendenee of a
Lady, and designed to be in a great meas
ure open to the contributions and indicative
of the liberality and good taste of onr lady
patrons, the Societyappeals with confidence
to tbelr generosity opun this oocasion and
ask the Ladies of the city and county for
such a rich and magnificent display of flora!
beauty as will do honor to themselves and
be a praiseworthy monument ot their liber

in this County can easily make a very cred
itable display. This section of country is
protaVy not peculiarly adapted to raising
applt s, pears, peaches, and .some other well
known kinds of fruit, yet the increasing
number of orchards, aai the labor aud care
bestowpd upon fruit culture, famish evi
dence both of a strong desire to raise a
tupp'.y of fruit and of a reasonable degree
of success, sufficient at least to afford proper
encouragement to inoreasea efforts in this
direction. The Society will very cheerfully
co-operate as far it can to create a favorable
impression in behalf of this valuable branch
of indnttry.

proper appreciation of this arrangement,
and the result should be a corresponding
effort on the part of Agriculturists to achieve
inoess in their own special line, the Society
will regard it as a promising iadication oi
future confidence and support.
The systematic arrangement and classifi

attention. The Society desire to
afford the skillful housewivet and indus

With pleasure the Society ttatet the fact
that these department! have heretofore been
aiwayt well represented, and from the known
liberality and commendable enterprise ol
our manufacturers and dealers, we have no
apprehensions of any failure herein on the
part of exhibitors at the coming Fair. The
opportunity fur seeing articles of the highest
workmanship aud best mechanical skill is
one that do person should neglect, and a
better opportunity is rarely otlered than will
be presented at the Fair. The number and
variety of articles manufactured in this
county, already equal those of any section
of the State, and are rapidly increasing. We
would gladly make a specific enumeration if
our limited space would permit ; as it is, we
not only cordially invite attention to such
speoimens as may be on exhibition, but ao
extended tour of observation to the various
manufactories of this city, Moline, Milan
and vicinity.
GENERAL REMARKS.
The Society earnestly hope for a success
ful Fair ; one that shall not leave '.hem bur
dened with indebtedness, and yt-t be .satis
factory to the people generally. Our Fair
will be the first of the season in this part of
the country, following closely the termina
tion of the summer harvest, and at a time
when relaxation from severe labor is requi
site and neoessary. In this time of vacation,
so to speak, it affords recreation, enjoyment,
and meant of information respecting agri
cultural pursuits, as agreeable as it is essen
tial and enoouraging. If any antagonism of
sentiment has existed in times past between
the city and country, it should be banished
and forgotten. The interestt of both are
essentially the tame, and that which pro
motet the welfare and growth of the city,
brings increasing prosperity to the surround
ing country. Home difference in customs
and modes ot life is always observable be
tween the inhabitants of cities and the farm
ing communiiy, but in no inctauoe is it no
much a question which it the best, at it is
variation in kind and a result of neoessity.
Intelligence and worth among citizens, ca
pacity for mental activity and progress, aud
good judgment of men and things is limited
to no particular locality, and the ''sober
second thought" cf s people living; a quiet
oountry life it no more liable, if as much, to
be unsound, than it it amidst the whirl and
excitement of towns and citiet. The occa
tiont of excitement are less frequent in rnral
life, the people grow up less excitable, with
habits of greater rsservo and caution, are
not carried sway to the same extremes either
of opinion or action, and at the ritk of be
ing thought somewhat old fogvith we may
farther add, it it upon the integrity, relia
bility, and practical common sense of an
eduoated, prosperous industrious, agricultu
ral population that statesmen and econo
mists found the sorest bopet and best guar
snteet of stable governments and enduring
public institutioni. In cities, the constant
commingling of the inhabitants, and the
more frequent interchange of senti
ments and opinions upon enrrent
topics may perhaps ' produce a

fact both are much more seeming than real ;
the one is principally a certain brusriueness
and off hand habitude of mind which comes
of more frequent personal oontacl end inter

of knowledge derived from ordinary topics
of conversation; neither qualification ne
cessarily implies greater natural gifts, nor
superior knowledge of essential attri

marked proclivities of gentlemen whose
fortune and leisure permits, and who are not
ambitious of distinction in pablio life, is to
avail toemtelvet of the freedom from eicite

which a country residence offers, and enjoy
ing the advantages which Cow from caltured
taste, liberal education, and enlarged ex
perience, devote their time and attention to
the lest exciting but equally ennobling bust
nest of rural affairs or the elegant ease and
hospitality of a suburban residence. To
such, the ttocking of their forms with the
best breeds and varieties of cattle, the im
portation and rearing of horses, the study ol
models and designs for buildings and out
houses, the contemplation and management
of the broad acres which constitute their
farms, the beautifying and adorning their
hornet, their lawct, their avenues and parka,
in accordance with the various and diverst
tied rules of landscape gardening ; each and

pations of farm life and matters of the high

pleasurable satisfaction, hven the Philoso

and his bucolio genius displavs its activity

least, are sufficiently lutereni'-og to inspire
the wish on the part of ibe reader that he

Hock Island countv at the present date
has a population of 35,000 inhabitants. It
has more than an average amount of good
timber, and at least nine tenths of the sur

Fortunately, where cereals are produced
less profitably, as a compensation, fruit an
grass appear to be surer and more abunrl

impressed with its great natural advantages
and t!s future jmssibilities. i he wate

the inception of future greatness, the mere
foreshai:owng of manufactures and trad
which, ere long, will become a matter i
pride, if net amazement, to those who have
witnessed the beginning and rapid develop
ment of these sources of wealth and indut
try. To these advantages, the gifts cf
nature and the the precursors of future
greatness, we may add the coal hehis in cu
midst, cr lying contiguous, whose product
pre ultimately to find a market at our levee
and consumption in the furnaces and fire
of our manufactories. In a ratio enrrcs
ponding to the increase jf manufactures
the production ot coal and tne developmeu
ot agricultural resources, railroad facilities
have been supplied. Already, in riifTeren
directions througd the county, fourdifieren
lines of railway have been rompleted, an
are now in successful operation, making th
means of travel and transportation accessi
ble and convenient to a majority of on
citizens ; while the whole western border of
the county ia washed by the broad Father o
Waters, upon whose placid bosom countless
treasures are destined yet to float
With all these present advantages, an
the flattering possibilities of the future, w
ask our farmers in all sincerity whutie there
to prevent a corr. ;ionding progress in ag
ricultural affairs. The Society fail to tee
anything, either in soil, climate, locution, or
otherwise, which should prevent our county
from attaining a commanding influence in
industrial pursuits, and a potential voice in
the a'Jairs of the State. With a healthy
and prosperous growth of the city. Bod a
reciprocity of good feeling between the
town and country, it will be but a few years
at farthest before many of the citizens in
town will avail themselves of the easy facil
ities for goirg and coming to provide
suburban residences and retire to the pleas
ures of country life, The ranks of wealthy
aud intelligent agriculturists must contin
ually increase, a taste for rural err ploy meets
and enjoyments diffuse itself more and more
among the people of the city ; and in the
prosperity of both town and country the
happiness and comfort of ail classes of citi
'.ens will be promoted and increased, so Ion?
at h-aven vouchsafes the blessicss of good
government and nncorrupted people.
Any arrency which tends to bring the
people closer together, which blends their
interests and compels an interchange of
Ifood feeling, or produces a good under
standing among all, is a valuable agency of
improvement, a humanizing element of
fociety. What better agency of its kind
for such a purpose than yonr County Fair ?
The desire'to exhibit whatever ia excellent,
and a resort to fairs and public exhibitions
for that purpose, is always characteristic of
a prosperous and enlightened commnnitv.
Upon this natural trait of the human mind,

Why Sr. Bcbenck's lYEediclnes are

Why is Schtnak'f Palmonic Byrnp it inch
general demand ? The answer is a very simple
one: It it in demand because its healing pro
perties are greater than those poaeetssd by any
other medicine in use for the etre of Consump

towards a curt. Without pure blood disease can
never be eradicated from the system. As well

to cure consumption without a complete purifi

perty of Dr. iehenck's Pulmoolo Pyrt. But
it does more than this. It not only purifies the.
blood, but it allays irritation of the bronchial
tubes. It colleete and ripens the impure mat-

But Dr. Schenek has other remedies. Thereare

have them. Now, why are they so essential to
the cure of consumption? Because tb ingredi

upon the liver, causing that important organ to
throw off its torpidity, and make healthful se

BUT tlOOD HEALTHY BLOOD
