OBIIUABT.
The intelligence of the death of William J.
Shepp&rd at hia residence in Port Byron on
the 6ih inat , waa received too late for notice
in last weeka paper. In the death of Mr.
Sheppard, communities in thia and Henry
Coantiea in business relations have coffered
an irreparable loss. Hia bnainess associates
have lost an ab'e coadjutor, bia acquain

by hia oooatant exhibition of sterling virtue;
the country a ataunoh and patriotic citizen,
and bis wife and children one whom they
joatly reverenced.
In thia community for the past twenty
years Mr. Sheppard bas oconpied a position
of honorable prominence. A native ot
Scotland, he emigrated to this country in
early maohoood and without the advantages
of education, and without no other capital
than his untiring energy industry and bon

of view a profnable life.
Ilia course was not one constantly enliv
ened by the amilea of fortune, but waa rather
one of constant struggle. And his every
success was well deserved by being well
earned.
Upon coming to this country he first set
tied in New Jeraey, and engaged in manu
facturing: after which he poraued the asme
avocation io New York and Lowell Mass.
Upon the discovery of gold io California,
he ! among tbe Erst to visit the shores of
the then far off Pacific. After several years
of arduous labor, contending with almost
every hardship and privation, he accumula
ted a handsome competence, which he in
vested in California securities, and returned
to the States for his family. He soon learned
that the fru"a of his labors, sufferings ht.il
dangers were swept away by the failure
of his agent.
Starting anew, without any abatement ol
hia fortitude, he came to the State of 1'linois
in I8.1O, settling upon a farm in Whiteside
county ; but his energies craved a wiilur fitld
of action. He came to this county and en.

Talk. With reference to the talked of
disturbance between the Hibernians and
Orangemen in New York, we hear it freely
said upon our streets that no foreign entni'
ties should he allnwed to disturb our peace
at home in our cities. Difference of opin
ion is freedom. Assault and tear of assault
is nut. Public opinion says that men should

Place acx Dames. A Slate citizen has
been in bare, complaining of the scarcity ol
huuae accommodation in Rock Island. Hs
and bis lady cannot suit themselves. Where
he came from he could find all tbe acoom
modalion ha wanted; houses and suits of
apartments were to rent in abundance. The
lady we would gladly asaiat in hontibg a
auitable place of residence, werw it in our
power; but, oh, State citizen! did it never
occur to thee to be silent about dating from
a spot whose plaoes of residence grow weeds
in front and behind ? The surest sign ol
tbe prosperity of a well established western
city, is in tha scant accommodations she can
afford visitors, despite her best intentions,
Our city certainly has room for an odd one
or two ; but cannot offer a chohe.

FoorFlukeK He don't wihh to be though i

I this is rougb on him; tobe printed before th
public, with every wrong construction put
upon his actions by a tuaxi, if not pxe udo,
demi innmie; a public female imttatrix j
of secret professional black mailers! (Fluke
of course feels that he has "been before the I
court." Having been there would have liked '
to have had the chance to bring his dis
gusting antagonist to fair book. But she

error and costs. Even had she apologized
to him fully, his position would but have
been that of tbe accidentally by mistake
whipped Frenchman, who said ''Sare ! You
apologize from me, yon shake hinds at me,
yon beg pardon with me, but you cannot
unntrike mc !" No, Mr. Fluke is deserving
of our hearty commiseration, and has it.
But oommiaeration ia not even aa good as
beuzioe; it is no use on pitch and paint.
Biding his time, however, and turning
quietly round, Mr. Fluke, after the case was
disposed of, ''went for" Mamie and Mamie's
Ma, on a charge of conspiracy to defame
character. Tbe LamberU "caved m, auU

Davenport Permission was given, (as noth

and they ''scooted" into Illinois. To look
upon this question more seriously, for a
moment, we congratulate Mr. Fluke on
having bad his troubles. Instead of sensi
tively giving way to fear of public eiposure
no matter how false and wicked he came
oat like a man, and, by his testimony, the
beautitnl city which watches us as we her,
is freed from one of the most insidious
