had ben, and kindled a tire aDd break

become more alarmed and came to the con
olnsion to leare the ipot, 1 then nsoended a
hill and crossed a ridge towards Squaw ran
and oame upon a trail or path. Here 1
stopped and meditated what to do; and
while I was, loos musing, I law three deer
coming towards me in full speed. They
turned to look at . their pursuer; I looked
too, with all attention, and saw the flash of
a gun, and heard the report. As soon as the
gnu was fired, I saw some efogi titart after
them, and began to look about tor a shelter,
aod immediately madeor a large log, and
hid myself behind it; but most providentially
1 did not go elear to the log; for had I done
so, I might have lost my lit by the bites of
rattlesnakes, for as 1 put to the ground, to
raise myself op that 1 might see what was
become of the hunters, and who they were,
I saw a large heap of rattlesnakes, and the
top one was very large, and coiled np very
Bear mj faoe.and quite ready to bite me, this
then compelled me to leare this situation,
let the ooneequences be what they might. In
consequence of this ooourreooe, 1 again led
my coarse, bearing to the left, and came
upon the head waters of Squaw Run, and
kept the Run the remainder of the day.
During the day it rained, and I was in a
deplorable situation, so cold and shiTering
were my limbs, that frequently in opposi
tion to all my struggles, 1 gave an involun
tary groan. I suffered intensely this day,
from hanger, though my jaws were so far
reeorered from the injury they sustained
from the blows of the ludians. that wLt"-

In the "' 'nance,
the All Ve' came within one mile of
0C jj r Ktver though 1 was ignorant
jr . the time; and here at the foot of a
' j through a moBt tremendous night's
4-ein, I took up my fifth night's lodging; and
in order to shelter my infant as moch as
poiible, I plaoed him in my lap, and placed
my head against the tree, and thus let the
rain fall upon me. On the sixth (that was
Sabbath) morning from my captivity 1
found myself enable for a very considerable
time, to raise myself from the ground; and
when I had onoe more, by hard struggling,
git myself upon my fret, and started upon
the sixth days encounter, nothing was so
nearly exhausted, and my spirits were so
oonipletelv depressed, that my progress was
amazingly slow and discouraging. In this
almost help esa oondition, I had not gone
far, before 1 came to a path where there had
been cattle traveling; I took the path under
the impression that it would lead me to the
abode of some white people, and by travel
ing it about one mile, I came to an uninhab
ited cabin; and though I was in a river hot
torn, yet I knew not where I was, nor jet
what river bank I had come to. Here 1
was seized with feelings of despair and
under those feelings I went to the threshold
of the uninhabited cabin, and concluded that
I would enter and lie down and die. as
death would have been to me an angel ol
mercy in such a situation, and would have
removed xa from a'l my misery. Such
were my feelings at this distressing moment
and had it not been for the recollection ol
those sufferings which my infant would
endure, who would survive ice for some time
after I was dead, I should have carried my
determination into execution. Here too, I
heard the sound of a c w bell, which im
ported a gleam of hope to my desponding
heart. I followed the sound of the bell, till I
came opposite the fort at the six mile island:
when 1 eame there, I saw three men on the
opposite bank of the river. My feelings at
the sight of them, wore better felt than de
scribed. 1 called to the men, but ther seemed un-
willing to risk the danger of coming after
me, and requested to know who I was. I
replied that I was one who had been taken
prisoner by the Indians on the AUepbacj
river, on last Tuesday morniue, and b rid
made my escape from them. They request
ed me to walk np the bank of the river for
a while, that they might see if the Indiana
were making a decoy of ro, or uoi ; bnt 1
replied to them that my feet were so sore
that I could not walk. Then one of them,
James Clo.sier, got into a canoe to fetch me
over, and the other two stood on the bank
with their rides cocked, ready to fire on the
Indians, provided thev were nsmg me aa a de
eoy. When Mr. Closiercame nearto the shore
end saw my haggard face and dejected sit
uation, he exclaimed, "Who in the name of
God are you T' This men was oue of my
nearest neighbors before 1 was taken ; yet in
six days I was so much altered that he did
not know me, either by my voice or ooun
tenance. When I landed oa the inhabited
side of the river, the people from the fort
came running out to see mo. They took the
child from me, aud now I felt safe from all
danger. I found myself unable to move or
to assist myself in any degree: whereupon
the people took me and carried me out of
the canoe to the house of Mr. Oortut
II ere when I felt I was secure from the
savages, aud oruelties of the savages, for the
first time since my captivity, my feelings re
turned with ell their poignancy. When I
was dragged from my bed and from mv
home, a priioner with the savages : when
the inhnman butchers dashed the brains of
one of my dear children out on the door sill,
end afterwards scalped bim before my eyes:
when they took and tomahawked, scalped
end stabbed another of them beyond me on
the I.ilano. ; end when with still more bar
barous feelings, they made e hoop, and
stretched his scalp on it; nor yet when I
endured hunger, cold, and nearly nakedness,
aud at the same time my infant sucking my
very blood to support it, I never wept. No,
it was too mnch for nature.
A tear wonM have been too great e lux
ury. And it is possible, yes, more than
probable, that tears at these times of dis
tress, would have been fatal in their conse
qoenoes ; for the savages despise a tear.
But now that my danger was removed, and
1 was delivered from the pangs of the sav
ages, the tears flowed freely, and imparted
e happiness, beyond what 1 ever experienced
before, or ever expect to experience in this
world. When I was taken into the house,
having been so lone from fire, and h.,
endured so muoh from hunger, for a !l0nir
period, the heal of the lire and the amell of
the provisions, which the kin-inesa of the
People immediately induced them to provide
for me, oaosed me t- ..;. Home of the

preparing for me, he became greatly alarm,

creek, twenty miles above Pittsburg, stood
by and oonnted the thorns, as the women
took them out, end there were one hundred
end fifty drawn ont, though they were not
all extraoted at that time, for the next eve
ning, et Pittsburg, there were many
more taken out. The flesh was man
gled dreadfully, end the skin and
llesn were hanging In pieoes on my feet end
legs. The wounds were not healed for a
eoasiderable time Some of the thorns,
went through my feet and came ont at the
top. For two weeks I was enable to pat my
feet to the ground to walk. Besides which,
the rain to whioa I was exposed by night
and the heat of ion, to which my almost
naked body was exposed by day, together
with my carrying my child so long in my
arms, without any relief, and any shelter
from the beat of the day or the storms of
the night caused nearly all the skin of my
body to come off, to that my body was raw
nearly all over. The two men's tracks which
I had followed down the run, referred to be
fore, and whioh made me so muoh afraid,
were spies, James Anderson end John
Thompson, who arrived at the station very
soon after me. The news of my arrival at
the station spread with great rapidity. Two
spies took the intelligence that evening as
far as Coee Station, and the next morning to
Reeds Station, to my husband. It also
reached Pittsburg that same evening, and
the next morning a young man who was em
ployed by the magistrates of Pittsburg, came
for me to go immediately to town, to give in
my deposition, that it might be published to
the Amerioan people. Being enable to walk
or to ride on horseback, some of the men
took me, and carried me into a canoe on the
river, end took me down in this manner,
and when we arrived in Pittsburg I was
taken from the canoe, in the arms of men,
to the office of John Wilkios, the father of
the Eon. Wra. Wilkins, Jndge in the United
States Court. The deposition which I there
gave in, was published throughout the Union
in different newspapers of the day, aod has
since been preserved and may be read in
Loader's Narration of Outrages by the In
dians. As the intelligence spread, the town ef
Pittsburg and the country for twenty miles
ronod.Vet all in a state of commotion.
A boat sunset the same evening by husband
came to see me, in Pittsburg, and I was
taken back to Coot Station on Tuesday
morning. In the evening I gave the account
of the murder of my boy on the Island,
the next morning (Wednesday) there was a
soout went out, end found it by my direc
tions, and buried it, after being murdered
nine days.

It is ia demand because its keeling pre-'

Thousands have testified it with complete sat

But. Dr. Schenck has other remedies. Thcreare
other ageneiea to be empleyed in tke eure of

If it be asked why 9ebenek's Mandrake Pills
are so popular, the question is answered as
readily as ia ttie ease of the Palmonio Syrsp.

have almost universal . application to hnman
diseases, and, though they have been mainly ra
oouoetidcd in pulmonary oases, their virtues in
other maladies have been so completely aud sat
isfactorily demonstrated that the people will
have them. , Sow, why are they so essential to
the cure of consumption ? Because the ingredi

upon the liver, causing that important organ to
throw off its torpidity, and make healthful se
cretions. The Mandrake Pills

By their use healthy bile is secured. As a con
sequence. Impaired digestion is restored, food is
properly assimilated, good, healthy blood is the
result, and, of eonrse, strength is reneT.ed, and
the great process of healing thoroughly inau
gurated. Whole pages of newspapers could be
filled with testimonials from those whs have
used the Mandrake Pills aud been benefitted by
them, A thousand boxes are sold to-day where
ten were sold four years ago, and the "cry is still

a greatly enlarged and very magnificent build
