The Freaks of CcriD. Up beyond the
Harper House, an amatory gentleman was,
yesterday, checkmated by tbe lady of his
love, who served him right, in m somewhat
muacular manner. She is married and pru
dent. It is just possible tbat she may ap
prove of him in hit own proper place : bnt
though he has tried hard to get her to view
him from an amatory point for the last four
or five years, he has never got any nearer
than he waa when be stood on his feet at a
respectful distance from her, before his lan
guage provoked her to precipitate him down
the steps. He doet more than love his
neighbor; be loves his neighbor's wife. And
as a result of hi years of admiration, he
finds that its improper exhibition has met
with a proper reward. We do not know
wnether he is most sore in feelings or per
on.

The remark now heard on our streets is,
that Davenport bids fair to have waterworks
the first. The impurity of the water which
some of our wells contain, and the expense
of hauling water np to our residences from
the river, ought to waken us np to the faot
that ns we know we must have water works,
the sooner we take steps to get them the
better. Is it that with an increasing wealth
we are growing too lazy to look after a vital
necessity of the age? Surely none of ns ean
ever have been in city or cities supplied
copiously with water in every house, or we
should not be thus negligent. Before other
towns have opportunity to get np and tell ns
that we are behind the times, let ns take
steps to provide good supply of water for
our manufactories end dwelling houses, so
that we shall be in a position to use nil the
water we want at any time ; nod not be
obliged to haul from the river a occasion
demands, or be likely to suffer in conse
quence of drought. The water works ques
tion ia one that needs our instant attention.
The Yoke. A gentleman at Orion has
lately been digging a well on his property at
the above named place. About twenty feet
below the surface of the peculiar "earth" of
this region, he brought np an ox yoke. The
laud was his, and of course the yoke was
his, as is also the light from above. He
knew tbat tbe presence of the yoke was a
hint to dig some more if he wanted to find
water, but he strayed from his search for
the aqueous fluid, and, igniting a little fresh
tobao 'O, aud raising his hat to let a little
cool air pass over his head, set out, on that
level, to find out if the oxen were now on
his plaoe, and, if so, what they were doing,
as he had not looked after the fences late'y
oo mere, i be yoke snows tbat tbey were
probably a hefty span; but we eannot give a
full account of them until he returns from
his prereitrination. We hope that when he
does so, he will so to work a?ain and din
for water; that is his nece.sity, and may be
arother source of enlightenment to ns,
shonld he chance across another "level" of
old times.
The Germans of Cincinnati held a mass
meeting the other day to agitate the repeal
of the Sunday laws, at which the following
resolutions were reported for the whole
country, and general agitation wks recom
mended :
Unsolved, That out of the seven days ot
the week, there ought to be one day devoted
to rest and recreation.
Btstlced, That Sunday is the day fixed by
the State as such day oi rest and recreation,
and as tbe weekly holiday.
Jlesnlvtd, That such rest and recreation
can exist only when they correspond with
the tastes and inclinations of those who have
the benefit thereof.
Iieoteed,Tht every individual has a right
to enjoy himself after his own fashion, as
long as he keeps within the bounds of la
aad decorum, and does not interfere with
the customs and observances of his neigh
Dors.
Resolved, That no man has a right to pre
scribe to another how to observe Sunday
Resolved, That all disorderly conduct,
drunkenness, etc. should be Suppressed and
punished on week days as well as on Sun
days. Tbi OaGiX Factory. Mr. Davie, with
whom our people have been negotiating for
the location of his Organ Factory, for some
weeks past, has taken the pains to explain
to us the conditions and cirromstances cf
his negotiations, by way of explanation of
the causes that have made it doubtful about
his locating here, and we are satisfied from
what he says, that he and his partners are
reatly to meet us more than iia'.f way, even
in all couceesions; and that the apparent
failure is not due to any attempt or desire j
on bis part to do anything that is unfair
Ag&in we have this much to say, hat there !
is still a chanoe to secure tLis euierpri.e, if j
the right kind of effort be made. If the
thine will pay, it is certainly desirable to j
make the attempt. Tne proprietor, certain- !

To-day a gentleman was going down to tbe
ferry boat from East EaIe street, and
crossed the track just in front of an ap
proaching train ; his foot caught upon tbe
farther rail and he fell, fortunately out ot
reach of the cars. Had he fallen insido the
rails things wouid have been different, and
it is just possible that another engineer
oight have been innocently placed in Oliver
Feaalee position last November.
Thb Heat. It is wonderful bow people
manage to work in the city under the glar
ing sun, and yet yon will see men skilfully
toiling nnder its direct rays in every direc
tion ; often men who would rest if they
could, but tbey know that the press of busi.
nees obliges them to pot op with the heat
fox sake of the work that must be dane
Ladies appear cautiously, in tbe shade, io
tbe very lightest and flimsiest attire, of the
most charmingly fashionable cut. Hordes
hitched by the tie line to rings on posts,
lash their tails frantically at at the myriad
flies, and fret and fnme in their harness,
longing for shade and brush. Everything
pania for relief from the heat.
Rapid Work Some men have the
faculty for doing tbeir work welland rapidly
Such a man is Joe GaBkell.who has run the
length of the Rock ford road and paid the
men employed thereon in a little quicker
time than one would imagine. Ag an in
stance of how business is now done on the
Rookford, we notice a little trip this morn
ing, wherein Mr. Caskell left this city at nine
o'clock, went to Sterling, paid off one hun
dred and fifty men and returned in time to
dine at the Harper Hooaa at ona o'clock.
Who beats Joe ? .
