A part of thf llofrlish press has ma.e
haste to longest that tho death of Rkm'okth,
the oariman, was tho result of poisoo. No
one here imagiuni that such was the case
The tnau was subject to fits, and the natural
result of a life Nach as that which he had
led for the past Ese years was to produce
disonxe of the heart nnd oooseueut disorder
of the circulatory system. Kknkorth
doubtless rowed himself to death, and go
far from his sadden death at the oar being
a matter of surprise, it is etranetbat nature
has not heretofore revenged herseUl in like
manner upon ether professiotial elhletct
who havehabituallv overtasked their muscles
and recklessly overdrawn their stock of
vitality.
It is to be expected that this sad accident
will be made the text of countless sermons
gainst athletic sports, aud it is al'o to be
expected thai in condemning the suicidal
course pursued by men like Rkm-osth all
lovers of muscular pleasures and contests J
will be Indiscriminately warned of the wick!
edneis of thir war. Hut there is a wide
distinction liMween the flarvard or Oxfcrd
students who row an occasional race during
their university course, and men who pursue
rowing as tht? occupntion of their lives.
The same diatiuclioi appiie to all athletic
sports. Huso ball, pursued as a pleasure
and prop-rly suWirdiuate to the real busi
ness o: life, is not only blameless but de
ervitj; tiie warmest eucouratfemett of those
bu hare at hart the physical well-being of
tho fiture American. The profetuiuoal
p. rer of base ball is cot, however, aocom
pi.'h.ng particular'. nosle deettoy for
i.irnsiif or adding in any great degreo to
the welfare of bis fellow-countrymen. It is
the n.en who make of what should be an
amusement a profession who bring to
athletic sports whatever of reproach just
now attaches to them.
It is doubtless true that no wide popularity
can be gained for any muscular sports with
out sooner or later calling into existence a
class e.fmen who make snch sports a means
of livelihood. Nevertheless their existence
is certainly to be regretted. Poor KsNroHTH
was, according to all testimony, an booesti
gallant fellow; and for that very reason it is
11 the more sad that he should have adopt
ed a profession which repaired him to pass
his life either in fierce muscular contests or
in weeks of wearisome preliminary training.
To train for a single race and then to row
over a course of reasonable length may be a
positive benefit to the amateur rower ; but
lo train and row mouth after month is as
certain to shorten life ns is the excessive
use of alcohol or opium. The professional
rowi-r is committing what may Lea compare
tivuly slow ,bul tioue the less a certain
Uicide. It is to Lim that the strictures of
those who ondem athletio sports apply
not to
the man who pursues them with
mediation aud for the purpose of amuse
ment. That base ball matches have been in
my instances perverted to the purposes of
gambling and won and lost by trickery and
fraud is doe chiefly to the employment of
professional players. Men who play ball
fur recreation have no temptation to "sell"
a manoh game, and thus destroy its interest

Why Sr. Bchenck'i fiScdielnes art
o Popular.
Wby is Bohsnsk's Pnlaoai Syrnp fs saeh
general demand ? The answer is a very simple
one: . II is ia demand because Us bealing pro
perties are greater than those psssesssd by any
other medicine ia uis for the eure of Consump
tion. It puriflis tho blood one of tho trst steps
towards a curs. Without pure blood dissasecan
never be eradicated from the system. As well
expect water to run up hill of its own volition as
to core consumption without a complete purit-
eation of tho blood. This is the peculiar p
party of Sr. Sehenck's Pulmanio Syrup. But
it does more than this. It not only purifies the
blood, but it allays irritation of the bronohia
tubes. It eolleets and ripens the impure mat
ters eolfeeted there, aad eeables the patient to
throw them off by painless expectation: This
great syrup nas anonter virtue. It possesses
nutritious qualities which give sustenance, aid.
onsoquently, strsngth to tbe invalid, lit,
Sombine these three qualities, and you bare an
answer to the inquiry
WHY IS THE PULMONIC SYRTJP IN BtJOH
DEMAND?
Thousands have testified it with complete sat-
sfaotion; thousands have Ubtd it and been
eared; thousands ate using it and being cured.
But. Dr. Sohenck has other remedies. Thereare
other agencies to be employed in the eure of
consumption, and ho has provided them.
If it be asked why Sohenok's Mandrake Fills
ara so popular, the question ia answered as
readily as in the eass of the Pulmonic Syrup.
BCHEXCK'B HAS DRAKE PILLB
have almost universal application to hnman
dl-eases, aad, though they have boon mainly re
commended in pulmonary cases, their virtues in
other maladies have been so oonipletely aud sat
isfactorily demonitr&ted that the people will
have them. Kow, why are they so essential to
the eure of consumption ? Beoauso the ingredi
ents of which they are composed aet directly
upon ths liver, causing that important organ to
throw off its torpidity, and make healthful so
sretions. The Mandrake Pills
CONTAIN SO CALOMEL
to spread its poison through the patient's sys
tem. ..Their operation is simple and effectual.
By their nse healthy bile is secured. As a eon
sequenoe. impaired digestion is restored, food is
properly assimilated, good, healthy blood is tbe
resnlt, and, of course, strength is renewed, and
tbe great process of healing thoroughly inau
gurated. Whole pages of newspaper! eovld be
filled with teilimoniali from thoie who have
usd tho Mandraks Pills and boon benefitted ty
them. A thousand boxes are sold to-day where
ten were sold four years ago, and the "ery is still
they some." Tho faeilities for manufacturing
then hare become too limited, and, as a conse
quence, Dr. Bohenok has been compelled toereet
a greatly enlarged and very magnificent build
ing, to enable him to put up the requisite me
euinery to supply the constantly insreasing de
mand for his great medieise.
El'T GOOD HEALTHY BLOOD
is not tbe only requisite. The patient need
strength, Tbe entire system must be kept in
order. The weakened, emancipates- patient most
have flesh put upon and strength into his limbs
To accomplish these great oljoets is the speci
pronnee of
BCHENCK'S BKAWEED TOSIO
The acidity of tbe stomach, so distressing to
patients, and so I'.etrimental to healih.il effectu
ally removed. Tbe alkaline constituents ot tbe
Seaweed Tonio aoeomplish this. In addition to
this it imparts tone and vigor to the system, and
enables the patient to take the accessary indoor
exeroise wilhoutexhaustion. This ia vitality im
portant, though too frequently overlooked by
medical men. They advise exercise without
having the patient prepared for it. They tell
him to go out into the eool, raspiag air when he
should be exercising moderately where the tem
petatnre is suited so his diseased oendition, and
this too without giving hi in those remedies which
are oalouiated to impart strength while they
assist in be&fing up the ulcerated lungs and
bronchial tubes.
In this brief recital, tbe public have an an
swer to the question " Why are lr. Schenck't
medicinee $o popular?" The problem is Solved
so cleaily that noue but those who are wilfully
blind can 'ail to understand it. Tbe wonderful
cures that have been effected by Dr. Sehenck's
remedies, are the living, breeling and moving
advertisements upon wbioh Dr. fccbenok relies,
rbey furniih the evidence thai stands nccoa
(reverted and uncontrovertible. To theaa the
public la referred, with the most implicit confi
dence, and to them Dr. Sohenck now triumph
antly appeals as Irrefutable proof if the cor
rectness of his oft-repeated assertion that
C05SCMPTI05 CAN BE CURED.
Doctor Sohenok's perionol statement to the
Faculty of his own core was la these words:
"Many years ago I was in tbe last stages of
oonaumption, confined to my bed, and at one
time my physician thought I oooid not live a
week ; then, like a drowning man catchinaat a
straw, I beard of and obtained the preparations
which I now offer to the poblie, and they made a
perlect euro of me. It seemed to me that I
could feel them penetrate uy whole system.
Th.y soon ripened tbe matter ia my lungs, and
would spit up more than a pint of offensive
yellow matter every morning for a long time.
''As soon as that began lo subside my cough,
ever, pain and n,ght sweats all befcen to leave
me, aad uiy apfeitie became so great that it sit
with dithcoity inei 1 oould keep frm eating too
much. I soon gamed my strength, and bave
grown to flesh ever sinoe.
"I was weighed shorWy after say recovery,'
dded the aooior, "then looking like a mere
sseleloo, my weight was but aiuety-sevea Ibi
my present weight Is two hundred aud twenty
five (-15) pounds, and for ycarc I have enjoyed
uninterrupted hea.th."
Dr. Bohenok bas discontinued his professional
vlalts to New York and Boston, but at bis office
Ho. 15 North Sixth street, between the hours ot
V A. M. aud 3 P. St., be or his son, Dr. J. H.
Bchenok, Jr., sees patients every Saturday.
Those who wish a thorough examination with
the Respiromctes wul be oharged Si. The Res
pircmeter declares tho oxaot condition of the
lungs, and patients can readily loam whether
they are oureable or not.

me to my bed for afcout thirty-six to torty hours,
atd paining me so t irribly that it seems as if my

everything else. A person's band would be
thrown entirely off by Its thiobblng. In skcrt I
suffered agony iiidesotibable. Oar Vest Physi

When I feel my old plague coming on, I nse the
