TBI BAW11W OHIO B. ft,
In tbeia times of railroad disuters, when
the coming home with corporial fragments
;B box, is tha rale, it is well for the trev
alio? pablio to aalect roads whereon is exer
oiied that careful msnagemenl that ensnrei
safety to life. ; We have spent half of onr
life in traversing the country railroads.
and have vet to eel mixed up in the first
smash-up, or to be tumbled oat of a berth
by collisions or aooidenU. This we attrib
ute to seleoting the beet roads. Not long
since we bad occasion to visit Baltimore and
the East, and herewith touch, our editorial
hat to the excellent Mr. L. M. Cole, General
Western Passenger Ageot of the Baltimore
& Ohio R. R., by whose advise we acted
and passed over bis road in the day time.
From Columbus we went over the Central
Ohio division to the Ohio River. Here a
splendid new iron bridge one of the finest
structures oa the line, crosses the river, atd
the traveler ii on the main line of the road
and can go through without change of cats.
We have seen much fine soenery both in
the East and West, but must oouiess onr
surprise and acknowledge the force of Mr'
Cole's advice when we found oorself passing
through a splendid section of country and
amidst some of the finest scenery in tbe
world, the rich farming country of West
ern Ohio, down through the wild hills of
WettemYirginia, along the bright waters
of the Potomac, and on to Harper's Ferry
so memorable in the nation s war biKtorv
and finally to the City of Monuments.
is a ride well worth taking, and one that
calls to mind many of tbe exciting scenes
that have taken place during tbe last de
oada. There is also a feeling of security
as seated in the fcplendid Pulman Palace
cars, you dash over the double steal ra
track of this excellent road with no fear of
accident or collision, and enjoy the utiri
vailed scenery that lines the
road nearly its entire length.
The Western business of this road is im
mense and constantly increasing, which
considering tbe amount of competition, can
only be attributed to the careful manage
ment and business sagaoity of such men as
Cole, John L. Wilson, Esq .Master of Trans
portation, and James Walsh, tbe agent at
Chioago, who never let slip an opportunity
of adding to its rood name.
We had intended a lengthy aooonnt c
the monumental oitv. but must pass it with
only a reference to one of its most euter
prising citizens, J. J. Kromer, tbe proprietor
of the celebrated "Rosadalis." Those who
have tnisaed an acquaintance with "Jack''
Kromer have missed ooe of nature's most
genuine Ijpes of genial, gentlemanly, whole
aonled mer. and Droorietor of one of tbe
best preparations ever put up. In tkis buM
oens be is assisted, in -the obemical depart,
meet, by Dr. Pogb, a gentlemen of tbe old
school, a scholar and genial companion
To him we are indebted for some
very pleasant drives about that
beautiful ci'y, to Druid Hill Park and other
points of interest. W e also had tbe pleas
ure ot making ice acquaintance ot sat.
David E. Foutz, ooe of the most ausoestfu)
business men of that city. I rom Baltimore
we next visited Philadelphia. One of tbe
chief attractions of that city is the magnifi
oect tire proof, iron from, six story building
reoent'iy erected by Dr. J. H. Schenck, oa
the northeast corner of Sixth and Arch
sireets. It is one of the finest buildings
in tbe city. a perfect beauty in
architecture and desiu, and will be used
for the Doctor's yearly increasing business,
which ii so ably and successfully superin
tended by Mr. Wycoff, an excellent gentle
man, and Mr. Duncan, one of tbe moat ir
repressible geoioses a perfect encyclope
dia of political history and boak-accounts,
as be must be to attend to the Doctors ac
counts. At some future time we shall tell
more of him, and of our further trip to New
York, and the times we had in oompany
with Col. J. B. Danforth, oar old partner
A boy with musio on the brain and none
in bis pea may be ornamental, but when he
writes of "the satisfaction t,f having the
praise pf God appropriately rendered, (by
church choirs,) and in keeping with the ex
cellence of the average preaching of Da
enpoH clergy," he may be appropriately ao-
cueea or possessing sense "in keeping with
the excellence of the average" idiot, provid
ed, however, it be necessary to notice him
an, woion in this case has become very
questionable by frequent and continaal oc
enrrance. ;
AwoMAXlefta happy home in Omaha

enport with another man. A few days ago
the husband arrived and the 'tother maa
dodged out of the back door and left the
woman to face the mnsie alone. She did
it, and refused to return to the home she
had deserted, and now she and the 'tother
man are indioted for adultery, and the fel-
ow who left by the back door is going
alone now behind the bars. Stealing wives

I r we may believe the spavined organ of
the Republican party in this county we do
not allude to the Moline Review our mod
est Ciunty Clerk, Major James Micbae
Beardsley, is a candidate for Congressman
at-Large. We are like many others in this
vioinity, in that we would as soon see Jeems
step into Logan's old boots as any other Re
publioan in the State, if it were not for one
thing. It would be moat too bad to send one
so pure and guileless into the seething oe.s-
pool at Washington. Bnt as death loves
shining mark be will be among the early
slain when the convention meets, and
such scarred and weather beaten champions
of the political arena as Oglesby enters.
However, Jeems is like Oglesby ia one re
speot. He don't want the offioe and won'
take the nomination nnless he is seduced
into it, by the pure minded persuasion of
M. T. Weiser, who has gone to the conven
tion to distinguish himself among the other
office seekers. "Jeems" has intimated tons
that he is a little afraid of the results,
if nominated, and could we say anything to
cheer, or encourage, we would gladly do so
Courage Jeems remember what the boy
wrote home to his fa. her.

The grapes grown at the Rook Island

very superior in flavor, and stand at the
head of the list with buyers. Orders left' at

The church in this city will part with bim
with regret, and will follow bim with the
kindliest feelings of remembrance and
friendship. Positive in thought and forci
ble as a speaker; radical in politics, yet lib
eral in religions theories, his daily inter
course with men fully exemplified the faith
be professed, and gave him a strong hold on
the respect of all classes. We ara almost
disposed to n a al, an th wiadom of the
church in deprWins; ns of so highly re
speeted a citizen. Rock Inland's best wish'
