great benefit to Davenport grain shippers,

The great inorease of Davenport business
on the Uookford, Koek Island & St. Louis
Railroad bas necessitated something of a
oiiauge in its freight delivery arrangements.
The oompauy has leased tbe stables on the
soutn side of lnird, near Koek laiana
street, the indefatigable transfer agent,
Capt. Qabbert, bas taken potsessioa of
them, and the transfer force, ten men and
sixteen horses, have taken op their quarters
therein.
Shipments south on this road from tbis
point have reached a magnitude that aston-
lanes steamboat men, wnile tney cause a
satisfactory smile to pass over the faoes of
the new managers of the Koek ford line
every time they speak of the business. For
a month an average of twenty cars a day
grain and other produce has been loadeo
on the Uockford cars at tbis depot. Teams
and men are busy collecting freight aud
loading cars with it, from dawn till dusk,
and off they roll in long trains southward,
mostly, with soms to the eastward.
Shippers are no more dependeet on the
uncertainties of low water steamboating, or
the old roond-aboot railway rou'e, ia ship
ping prodooe southward at this season ;
they oan reach St. Louis and other desirable
points down river as easily and elinoat as
quickly as Chicago.
It will be no longer than two years, be
fore a railroad will skirt the banks of tbe
Mississippi from St. Paul to Davenport on
its west, and thence to St. Louis on its east
bank. The effect of will be to force steam
boats ioto better and surer time witb pass-
eogert elte that portion of tbeir ocoopa
tion will leave them and to create a gen
eral use of tugt for freight purpotes on the
IDDer river. Hut attar all. it rlnaa look a
little aa if the qoi'.tiou of the "commerce of
tbe Valley," as the St. Louis papers delight
to call it, in its carrying foture, is to be
solved by the locomotive as well as by tbe
steamboat, each forcing the othi r to do tbe
business at tbe lowett nottible rates.
