RKSISTRATIOH.
To-morrow the Democratic voters of Rock
Island will have their last opportunity for
registering before the approaching election.
Every one ehould attend to this withont fail.
It is a duty he owes to bis party and to his
country. There is every reason to hope for
some encouraging resuil from the election
of the 7th. Tbe Republicans are noinler-
ested and unprepared. A full tura-ont of
Vmooracy might carry them by surprise.
Lot no Democrat fail to register to-morrow,
who has aot already dona so, or much leu
fail to vote oa the 7th.

McaiCAL Ivtc LLtoxMca. We reoived a
oall, yesterday, from Prof. Braunlich, of the
Da Beriot Club, Davenport, who informa ns
that the probabilities are that this popular J
musical aooiaty will favor the citizens of
Rook Island witk three entertainments
during the ooming winter. An invitation
has been extended to the olnb by numerous
parsons of oar oily who take great interest
in suoh matters, aad subscription papers
ill probably soon ba ciroulated. if every
thing transptraa harmonioualy the first con
cert will be given ia the early part of De
cember. We bopa to aea tba movement

Tub Fifth Spam. The false work for the
support of the fifth span of the new bridge
ia being built, under Superintendent Wren-
shall's piers, as if it were intended to last a
decade iastead of being for temporary nse
only. This ii beoause it will be osed after
the ioe forms aad floats, when no more pole
sete will bo able to atand against the bang
ing of the period. Five large, oblong cribs
are being sunk, as if they were wooden piers,
Each crib is surrounded by bollow sheath
ing, whioh is to ba filled with rip-rap. The
expense is about as great as that of all the
rest of the false work put together. There is
do experimenting witk uncertainties in this
great work 00 ehance given for delay by
aocidenta to supports. The old bridge
hardly mora firm than is tbe falsa work
which permits tba erection of the new one,

There are many reasons wky our RepubH.
can friends should aupport S. S. Hayes
eemooratie candidate) for Congressman-at
large. Aside from bis acknowledged ability
and bis general qualifications for tba posi!
lion, it is absolutely necessary for tka wel
faro of tba oonntry that the present Republi-
caa majority ia Congress ba largely reduced.
Tba Demooratio power in that body is too
iasignifioant to place any oheok whatever
on toe plundering propensities of organised
rings, and wealthy Tailroad corporations
Out poblio lands are beiag given away ia
tracts as large as kingdoms. Onr public
funds are being embezzled ia sums too
great for compulation. Disorder prevails
aognes enjoy a free and untrammelled
reign. No political body oaa rwmain pare
and andefiled, while strong' enough to set
public opinion utterly at defiance. If tbe
Demooratio wing ia Congress at twice as
large aa at present, a very different state of
affairs would exist. The Repablican leaders
would be com polled, in self defence to de
noaace aad pnnisk bribery aad corruption
and to sea that our national affairs were
economically managed. Mr. Hayes is also
aa advocate of free trade doctrines, and
consequently a reliable friend of the interests
of the West. Oa these two points be has
even received the eadorsemeat of the Chica
go Tribune, one of the very foremost Re
publican organs in the country. We trust
our Republican friends will give these eug
gestions a careful consideration, and accord
to ns the ffenerous assistance cf their
votes. -
Our candidate for- County Treasurer is
young man of moat excellent capacities
White bis opponent has never enjoyed the
slightest business experience, and is equally
unfitted for the place by culture and eduea
lion, Mr. Jarvis has been literally reared ia
the counting-room, aod will make one of
the beatpublio officers Ilock Island County
has ever bad. His moral character ia irre
proachable. Not a single word can be
said against it. And taken
altogether, he is just the man lor the place
and stands a brilliant chance of being
eleoted. Having just taken a fair acd hon
orable start in life, he will reoieve the suf
frages of many of his friends of the opposite
party, and will run magnificently.
Our candidate for County Surveyor, Mr
Alexander Hazlitt, of Edgingtoa township, is
known better in the country than in
the cily. We ean aasure oar readers, however
that be is eminently qualified for the office,
and is a man of sterling lotejrriiy and
straight forward manly qualities. It is no
more than right that soma of our official
should be choeen from the country. At
present, our republican Sheriff is a resident
of Rock Island, and has been for many years .
the same may be said of our County Clerk'
and our Reoorder aad Circuit Clerk. They
are not residing hce simply to execute their
official duties. They are permanent resi
dents of Rock Island. The present repub
lican ticket, which our country friends will
be invited to vote next week, completely ig
nores them. It divides the offices to be
filled between Chicago and Moline. Bever-
idge is from Ckioago, aod Gordon and Reed
are from Moline. There is in actual exist'
ence at this city a regular court-boose ring
whioh proposes to divide all the spoils be'
tween Rock Island and Moline favorites, lo
say nothing? of the pickings. Let ns see if
the voters in the country will be foola
enough to sustain it any longer.
It is useless for Democrats to bowl about
military despotism, poblio corruption, in
competent offioiels, high taxation tariffs,
and rasoality generally unless they are
willing to do something for the redemption
of theircountry. Talking, and whining,
and grumbling amount to nothing. As long
as yon are content witk suoh tactics, you
will remain under the heal of oppression.
Go to work I Do something praotioal
something that will tend toward a triumph.
Take an interest in the present contest. If
yoa are not registered , go and register the
very first thing to-morrow morning. If
your friends have not registered, prevail
upon them to do so without fail. And next
week, spare a few hours for your country
It will be a paying investment to you in the
redootion of your taxes. Go into the field
ana canvass tor your tiotet. laik to your
republican friends and show them the error
of their disastrous political course. Induce
them to vote your ticket. If they won't do
that, see that they vote for Hayes. And br
aa means see mat every member ot your
own party visits the polls.
Whining and grumbling are completely
played out Go to work, and see what you
can do for yourselves.
