The Stats tAia.- How would onr cit
izens like to have the Illinois State Fair
come off at Rock Ialand? It would add an
empetus to business; would attract a mulli
tude of strangers here; would fill oar ho
tels and keep our merchants busy; would
give as a first-ciass sensation for a week,
and would advertise our oity to an immeaa-
nreable extent. The location of our city
is central for such a pnrpose. Its railroad
and steamboat facilities are all that could
be desired. Thousands of people would
improve the opportunity to visit the Ar
s-nal and other improvements on the
Ialand. We could command a large at.
tendance from Dauenport aod vicinity, pro
vided we did not interfere with the Scott
County Fair. We erjoy every advantage
that cau be named, and no possible reason
exists why'we could not make a success o
it Now what does Rork Island, one and
all, think about the matter? Fcr one
are opposed to it, for the retton that las
fall's success of our County Fair demon
strated that it can be made to produce a
theae desirable results.
The Bjard of the State Agricultural So
ciely convenes at Springfield next month
for the purpose of receiving proposals fo
locating the next Sta'e Fair. No city ha
yel advanced its claiais, and the question
is now open. Do we want the State Fi
held here? What are we willing to offer to
gel 'i? Have we got life enough about us
to take the necessary action, and liberality
enough about us to offer the necessary in
duceinenu?
