turned to New York at too late an hour, this
afternoon, to admit of a formal welcome to
night, fie left Eastoa at 8 o'oloek this
morning, and then bade a tempoary fare
well to Pennsylvania in the only speech
yet made on the tariff. At Hoboken, on the
terry boat, and on this side of the river he
was surrounded by struggling, intensely
enthusiastic crowds. I he police finally sno
eeeded in getting a passage opened to a
carriage, ia which Mr. Greeley was driven
to the honse of a friend tn this oity. He is
in splendid health, and not visibly fatiirned
after one of the moat arduous journeys ever
undertaken by a pnblio man. tie regards

Nsw York, Sept. 2S. The Tribune ex
poses wholesale corruption attending the
Congressional legislation relating to tbe
Kansas racibo K.ilway. Speaker Blaine
figures in it for an amount which makes his
U nion I acibo bribe a mere bagatelle. The
Tribune says: "Astounding as were the
developments in the oase of the Credit Mo-
bilier, they prove to be only a brier and sin
gle chapter of many in the infamous history
of our National Legislation and Adminia
traiion. Additional facts have come to
light, and reveal damning evidence of the
bribery and corruption iu the halls of Con
grass, ineixan.a. r.oiDC n.uw.y grew
out of a local company whioh aold out to
men who understood well how to place
money where it would do most good. When
Samuel Hallett and others purchased the
railroad, they insisted npon having a state
meal of its liabilities. Ueneral atone sat
dowa aad, with his own band, wrote a list,
headed as follows: "Th. Leavenworth
Pawnee & Western Railway. Stock con
tracts so. a. ior me company cy J. u. stone
and Thomas Ewing, Jr., agents of tbe Com
pany, to secure the ratification of the Dela
ware and Puttawotomie treaties, and tbe
passage of the Pacific Railway bill." Thii
was a ooo&dential statement, intended ex
clnsively for the use of the new owners of
the road. The list is believed to be inooro
plete, but sufficient is therein developed to
show the complicity of Speaker Blaine, who
so vociferously denied all connection witb
the Credit Mobilier fraud, aod that of Sena
tor Pomerey, Mr. Shackleford, Secretary
Leber, li. VY. ibompson, and other shining
lights in the Administration camp. Speaker
oiaine is proved to bave received allot
ments ot 32,001) shares of stook. subject to
assessment, and valued at 1,025, OdO; 5,900
hares uot subject to assessment, valued at
f25,000, aad 2,000 share, more allotted
but not assessed. Tbe two latter lots, not
suhjeot to assessment, were secured by
Blaine for himself, while the 32,500 shares
of stock subject to assessment were suppos
ed to be for distribution among his support
ers, m helping to procure the passage ot lb
bill and subsequent amendments. oSaine
neighbors, in Maine, who wonder where he
made so much money, can here see that b
handled a bribery fund of nearly $2,000,000
in one railroad lob. An attache of the New
lork Times, named Wilson, is down in the
liat for $10,000. J. at. Shaokleiord, of
Kentuoky, is down for $15,000, and Caleb
Smith and (Secretary Usher for $15,000 eaoh.

New Yobk., Sept. 23. Horace Greeley
arrived here about 4 o'clock this afternoon.
Ha made a few short speeches oa the route
bither, and at Eastoa, Pa., said :
"I am a Protectionist all men know, bat
it is equally true that if a majority oi Con
gress should pass a law not reconcilable
th these opinions, 1 would not exercise
tha veto power. After reference to the
position of the Cincinnati and Baltimore
platform on this question, he added : "Now,
is there one man so unintelligent as not to
know that the present prosperity ot tbe iron
interest of this eouot-y depends not alone
ob the tariff, but on the faot that all over the
world iron is in great demand, aad is selling
at priees nearly double those of three years
ago. The world is iron hungry ; the world
is calling for more, and still more iron to
build railroads. Iron is high in all countries
beoauae more ts wanted tbun can ba pro
duced. It is not probable that five or evea
ten years henoe there will be so much more
iron ia tha world that prices will sot be
above tha cost of making it, here
everywhere. Jnst like corn, just like any
other product There if less iron in tha
world than is needed ; consequently, the
price has gone np, not beoause of the tariff,
but in all countries which have free trade as
well, and it is morally certain to remain high
for a considerable aumber of years." He
believed that if the the duty had been fixed
at $10 per ton at the olose of the war, and
remained there, we should have had double
onr number of furnaoes, aad been supplying
ourselves with iron very much cheaper than
we can bow get it, or oonld get it if the tar
iff were entirely on it
He was met by a large and enthusiastic
crowd at Hoboken, and, on crossing the
ferry, entered a carriage with Governor
Randolph, General Cochrane and Samuel
Sinolair, and drove to the residence of a
friend. No speech was made notwithstand
ing the demands of the multitude.
