Ddcoqce, Iowa, Oot. 29,-Abont 3 o'clock
this afternoon a fire, canaed by a spark from
a passing engine, broHe out in the extensive
yards of the Dubuque Lumber Company,
situated on the ground 6lled in by the
Illinois Central Railway, totally destroying
over three million feet of sawsd and piled
lumber, many piles being thirty and forty
feet high, entaling a loss varioasly estima
tad at from $45,000 to $b0,000, on whioh
there is an insuracee of $t,000, each in the
following Companies: Franklin, of Hart
ford ; Liverpool, London and Globe ; In- j
surance Company of North America, f 75,
000; North British, t30, 000. Owing to
a gale blowing at the time, it waa feared
that the large mills of the Company woold
go, bat the persevering efforts of the citi
zens and Fire Department saved them,
though much eostly machinery was badly
broken and damaged by removal. Tbe res
idence of Mr. Wells, on the bluff, was burn
ed and others endangered by fire catch
ing in leaves along the side of the Alufls,
which were madly lapped by the devouring
lement, which, with the aid of the gale
blowing, mounted the hillsides, easting a
lurid glare over the heavens, and illumina
ting tbe whole city, ao that its redectio a was
visible at Warren, III., 45 miles distant.
The suspension of these mills throwa 150
men out. of work. A man named Burns,
badly wounded in the head by an axe, is
abont the only accident reported.
At this boar, 11:30 p. m., a beavy ram ia
falling, whioh, it ia thought, will effectually
prevent the further spreao of the fire.

the small boat to see those in th water

for assistance. There were about te n ladies
on board. It is not known whether any of
the missing have since been picked up. It
