Hayes, the governor said that he believed that TUdt-u was honestly elected president of the Uuitcd State.-, and that if he was borne out in his convictiops he would under no considerations accept the office if delared elected. The conversation was brought on by remark of Mr. Gen. Mitchell, niece of Gov. Hayes, who said to the governor that she hoped her husband, Gen, Mitchell would be successiui in his present mission to Washington, and bring about a settle ment oi the question which was proving such a source of trouble, both to the gov ernor and his f amily, and to the country at large. A serious accident occurred last evening which may result in the death of the in jured party. The horse became fractious and was with some difficulty quieted, when the doctor alighted to ascertain what was the result of the accident he f ound that the injured man was Ncls eterson, who resides near the west ward school house. An examination of the man's injuries proved him to be seriously hurt. Doctor lioruon had the poor fellow conveyed to his home and at one procured the services of Dr. P. L. McKinnie who, upon examination of the wound found that Peterson was suffering from concus- sion ot the brain. lie remained in a comatose condition at intervals during the night and this morning was lying danger ously ill. Dr. Gregg, of Rock Island, was called this morning and he and Dr. Mc Lunnie were to make an extended exam ation ot Petersons injuries, lhe result has not been learned at this writing.
