John St., Philadelphia, invented a match known as

which needs only oue trial for the public to know
its importance. Its peculiarity is that it cannot be

Important point is that they are perfectly safe in
th hands of children: and the rat aud mice carry

manufacturers a special rubber to be placed near
match safes, thereby making these matches as con

Established
Made at the oldest Anvil manufactory in this
country. All English Anvils, after a time, become
hollowing on the face by coni.mil a Hammering in
use, ou account of the fibrous nature of the wrought
iron causiiiL' it to "settle," under the steel.
lint the Doay ot the Kagle Anvil being of crys
tallized iron, such settling cannot occur; and the
steel face therefore remains perfectly true. Also,
i it has the great advantage, that being of a more
solid material, and, consequently, with lets re
bound, the niece forged receives the FULL effect
of the hammer, instead of a part of it being wasted
bv the rebound, as wnh a wrought iron Anvil.

Tho Hartford Conrant calls it
"One of the strunget stories of the season. We
have read everj word of it, aud we do not wonder
tint speculation as to its authorship involves some
very prominent names."
The Springfield Republican calls it
"A swiftly moving story of singular pathos and
humor. Poor Leni by himself is enough to
prove the anonymous amhor a inasaer of his
crutt."
The Bost-.m Traveler calls !t
"One of the strrngest, most effective a id most
affecting tals a satire on the good Samarhauism
of the world -we luive ever read. No one will
deny the story's strength and force, nor the emi
nent ability of the writer."
The Christian Union culls it
"That remarkably fresh, strong and racy book.
It is by a power nothing less ttiau genius that our
author gradually draws the reader into the deepest
sympathy with poor Lem ; so thit when the book
is finished his hoinelv pathetic figure stays in tbe
memory one of those friends occasionally found
In literature and never afterwards lost."
