THIS RELIABLE PREPARATION, one of the oldest of American Pharmaceutical Products, still maintains its envtable reputation, and finds a steadily increasing sale without advertising, and iu spite of piracy. Its high reputation has tempted the cupidity of parties, whose only excuse for their unfair simula tions, exists iu the great popularity of the original, and accidental similarity of their names. Safety Matches, T1IEKK ARE MANY AC'CILEXTY AND FIRES I whicli I'Oeur from the live of the ordinary sul phur anil parlor inatelus. Either kind of these matches ignite readily upon any surface. To pre vent tire or accidents, which are liable to occur from their careless use Kl'UUAIM SMITH. Hit St. John St., Philadelphia, invented a match known as 'Pennsylvania Safety Match," hi eli needs only oue trial for the public to know its importance. lis peculiarity is that it canuot be ignited except, on the special preparation furnished with each box. They do not emit any disacreeable dor or make any startlinir, crackling sound on "insr ignited. Thev contain neither sulphur nor puospnorus, neither are tney poisonous, knottier important point is that they are perfectlv safe in the hands ot children : and the rats and mice carry ing them off can do no damage. Mr. Smith also manufacturers a special rubber to be placed near match safes, thereby making these matches as con venient as those which ignite on anv surface. With these improvements they are very desirable for private dwellings land business houses in whith combustible matter is kept. In case one should tie dropped ou the floor there would be no danger of Its burning the carpet or igniting i by any acciden tal means. Urocers have them for sale. Also man ufacturer of Parlor aud Sulphur matches. Tax Sale Notice. fT10 .1. S. MOSSMAX. RILEY", D. MOSS M MAN. D. S. A little better class of the tramps, but thorough tramps nevertheless, habitually haunt the reading rooms at the Cooper institute and Astor library. They strive to wear some semblance of shabby gentili y shave themselves with razors whicli they curry carefully in their pockets all the time, wash their laces and hands occasionally, and are seldom seen without paper collar?, even if their coaL-i are pinned tightlv over their breasts to hide the absence of shirts. and their pantaloons are held together by hundreds of pius. They do not frequent those places to read, but to have in the pen books before theoi excuses to sit in a warm place. It is really wonderful how well a soundly-sleeping bummer will simu- ate wakefulness. A lot ot them used to frequent Mat Goodersou's in old times.and sit about the stove to snooze, which annoyed the proprietor to such an extent that he took the chairs away. Then thev would lean up against the wall, and sleep stand ing. Determined to put a stop to their slumbers.he uiude a regulation that every one of them should hold a paper up before him, as il he were reading, whether he could read or not, and if one went to sleep and dropped his paper he should be ex pelled. They speedily adapted themselves to circumstances, and learned to sleep standing, holding the paper up mechanically-all the time. Then he required tnat tney snouia Keep one loot moving .1.1 1111 . . constantly, to snow that they were awake. hven that did not trouble them- They would stand up, hold the paper, wag one foot steadily and still sleep soundly, and some ot them, it is averred, acamred such practice in tho art of deception that they could even do all this and sleep with their eyes open.
