The fact that the Russians are usicg RouDjania as the terrt'ory through? which to make their passage across the Danube gives that country a certain interest, and it may he that tho. e who have ouly old at lasses to consult will be puzzled to find where that country is located. Itoumania is the name given to the united provinces of Wallachia and Moldavia (the name by which they are designated on the old maps) which were consolidated and suaruuted autonomy under a Frinee of their ownelec tion by the Treaty of Paris in 1856 Tti? new government wa9 organized iu the following year. It comprises a part ot the territory which, under the Roman Empire, was known as Dacia, and the people take their language and characteris tics from the settlement of the province by Roman soldiers in the sccoud cuuturv, after the conquest of the Dacians. who weie among the taost iormidable foes of the early Roman emperors. It is on this ac count that the people ot Roumauia resem ble more nearly the Latin races then the Sclavic population of the neighboring proviuces. The chief city is Bucharest, with a population of about a quarter of a million, and the Roumanians are lond ot designation it as a new 1'aris. The ian tuage spoken has been definitely classed among the Romance languages, to which the French, Spanish, Italian, and Portu cuesse belong, and the people are describ ed to h of the same .mercurial character as the French and Italians In later times the two provioces of Wallachia aud Mol davia were alternately under the dictation of the Russian and Turkish empires. Af ter the Russian war with Turkey, in 1S28, Russia exercised a protectorate over them till the peace following the war of I85G- 7, when they were consolidated as Roumania, and independence fit' the new country was recognized ry both lurkey and Russia. The sympathy of the Roumanian people is supposed U be largely with Russia. It is certain that the Russian troops are crossing the territory without any op position, though that might be accounted for by the fact that the Roumanians would b powerful to resist this encroach ment, ihere is little doubt, however, that, if the Russians confine the war to Turkish territory, they will have the full sympathy and secret, if not open, assis tance ot the Roumanians.
