The Clan Orders the People of Pennsylva nia to Hanff On to the Bloody Shirt, Philadelphia, May 31. Col. McClure says, in the Times to-morrow, that while the Republican leaders, have studiously refrained from any open aggressive assault upon tbe policy of the president, they have shown their sullec hostility in a most pointed and practical manner. Four jounty conventions of the party hve been held in the four Republican strongholds of the statePhiladelphia, Lancaster, Alle gheny, and Bradford. Philadelphia, which gave an aggregate majority of 36.500 for Tiayes, tabled resolutions drawn in the mildest form expressing confidence in the president, and their consideration provoked the harshest and most contemptuuU3 epi thets against him, Lancaster, that gave nearly 9,000 majority for Hayes, had no Republican convention, but the return- judges of the party footed up the vote for its candidates and separated without so much as a notice of their Republican pres ident. Allegheny, that gave Hayes nearly 10,000 majority, held a full Republican convention a few days ago and twice tabled a resolution approving the administration, the last time ten only daring to vote for it. Senator Cameron had been in the county a week or ten days before, and the men who shared most in his counsels and knew most of 'his wishes yelled the loudest in crying down the Hayes Revolution ' Bradford, the Republican Gibraltar of the north, has rejected an approving resolution. The state convention has been postponed to the latest day to escape immediate responsi bility, and then the president will be squarely or tacitly reproached, or be dis posed of by significant silence, or stabbed tiy qualified praise. A ticket will be pre sented as a matter of form and the party told to elect or defeat it, no matter which. As parties stand to-day, the whole Repub lican majority in the state last fall would be lost , in Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Allegheny, and the Democratic majority in the other counties might be anything from 30,000 to 50,000. .. There seems to be a notiou prevalent auit ng many Americans, more especially repor ters, that every Englishmen of good stan ding must have a handle to his name. Thus Mr. Munster, who committed suicide at the St, Louis fire the other day, is "Lord" Munster in one St, Louis paper, md "the Hon" in another; whereas, ir asmuch as ne married in that city, it might have been supposed that reporters there would have learned that he was net ther one nor the other. Americans, with all their politeness, seem incapable of pro perly adressing foreigners. A young Eng lish Dobleman who passed some time in this country told a friend that he could scarcely rememcer a smcie occasion when ne was properly addressed. The title of "Honor able," which is easily assumed by s!l sorts of people here, really means something in England, where it is only borne by the younger sons, and wives of younger sons, of earls; and all the sons, and their wives. of viscounts and barons, and the daughters or these last two orders ot the peerage; also by those judges of the high court of judicature "vho are not right honorable, and by the queen's maids of honor. Another point apparently vrv difficult to our countrymen and women is the style and mode of addressing the younger sons of dukes ana marquises. 1 hy should be spoken of and adtessed as Lord Henry Fa get, Lord William Lennox, as the case may be; never as Jjord i aect, Lord Lennox;,' and should be spoken to ns I'Lord Henry," "Lord William." In the same way the daughters of dukes, ruarqoi ses and earls should be spoken of and addressed in writing as Lady (Jeor gciana Hamilton Lady Caroline Stanhope, and spoken to as "Lady Georgiana," "Lady Caroline;' ' and the wives of younger sons ot dukes and marquises spoken of and addresssd in writing as Lady William Lennox, Lady henry Paget, and spoken to as "Lady William," "Lady Henry." Inattention to this often leads to confusion; for instance, if one should speak to an English gentlemen of "Lord Russell." meaning Lord Odo Russell, he would imagine that Earl Russell was meant These may seem trivial matters, but to many Englishmen they are almost as grave as if a man should write to a clergyman and address hira as Esquire, or misspell a name. Sometimes the carelessness ap proaches almost to rudeness. We have heard of an American gentlemen who at his own table kept on addressing a lord as "Mr." Many Englishmen of rank come here nowadays, and those who entertain them might at all events be expected to attend to these distinctions.
