A Wasli for Truit Trees.
Tbe following is recommended by a
coiuinission of fruit-growers, presided
over by Professor Cyrus Thomas, state En
tomologist of Illiuoia, and is part of a very
full report, embodying advice sto the best
means of fiehtine the insects that infest
the orchards of this state:
Insects and mildews, injurious to the
leaves of seedlings and root grafts, can be
ked in subjection or destroyed by a free
use of a combination cf lirno and sulphur.
Take of quick or ur.slartked lime, four parts,
aod tf common flour of sulphur, one part
(four pouuds of sulphur to one peck of
lime); break up the lime in srvall bits,
then mixing the sulphur with it !n a tight
vessel Cirun is best), pour on them enough
boi'iDg water to slack the lime toa powder;
cover in the vessel close as soon as the
water is poured on; this rur.kes also a most
excellent whitewash for orchard trees,
and is very ustful as a preventive of blight
ou poar trees, to cover th wounds io the
form of a paste when cutting disease parts;
also for coating the trees in- April. It
may be considered as the one specific for
uiaDy noxious insects and mildew in the or
chard and nursery; its materials should
alsyaj s be ready at hand; it should be used
quite fresh, as it would in time become
sulphur of lime and so lose its potency.
W hen ver dusting with lime is spoken of,
this should be used. This preparation
should be sprinkled ever the young plant
as soon as or before any trouble from ap
hides, thiips or mildew while the dew is on
the trees. This lime and sulphur combi
nation in distructive to these, pests in this
way first, by, giving off sulphuric acid gae,
which is deadly poison to minute life, both
animal and fungoid; and the lime destroys
by contact the same things, besides its
presence is noxious to them ; neither is it
injurious to commou vegetable life, except
in excess, unless the lime to the foliage of
evergreens.
A Ssltool-Birecsor Thrashed by Girls
Yamhill Reporter.
A young lady was teaching the Hewitt
school, but had some trouble with one of
the directors, who discharged her and
assumed control of the school himself.
The first day his authority was a success,
and he made a young lady stand out on
tbeflior; but the next day his female
pupiis consolidated themselves against
him, bound him hand and foot, took him
down, and gaye him a regular old fashioned
thrashing.
What a flood of reminiscences it brings
upon a young man's mind, these balmy,
beautiful June mornings, while he is
hunting around the bureau io the morning
for aSeidlitz powder, to come upon a diary
and read on the first and only written page,
under date of Jan. 1: "I wiil never again
tou'ih a single drop of any intoxicating
liquor. This day sees me free from the
chains of a habit that -," etc., and maybe
he laughs grimly or mybe he doesn't
laugh at all, but he keeps ou searching
around for that Seidlitz powder all the
same. Hawheyc.
