It would rather appear, that the men who, at present, hold the ofike "in many counties where the salary is made so small" as in this county that they "were not "good, competent meu a rather i-luu endorse ment ol' Sturgeon. Although "good, com petent men will not accept the office" while the salary is "so small," that is no argument why a "good, competent" woman will not accept it as it is well known, andean be proveu in the depart ment in Washington, that equally as com petent women can be, and are employed at salaries which men would refuse to accept. Supt. Everett, of our city schools, nuys Miss Kirkpatrick iaoneot the best teach ers in our public schools, and his statement is sustaiued by the fact that she has been a teacher in this city for the past eight or niue years, and is at present principal of the Fourth ward school. This wodTd be u gallant thing for that gentleman or any other to do." Mr. Sturgeon might as well withdraw along with Mr, Corbett for all the good it will do him to run. In the tumbling up ot that office, between Tillingbast, Me Farlane and others, it has become pain fully evident to the ring managers of the republican party, that just about one-half of the republicans of the county are willing to "give the girl a chance." The man who thinks of running against her, under the circumstances, exhibits very poor political foresight, a lack of politics sagacity, and very little hard business sense such a course is terribly retro active sometimes on a young and ambitious politician. Better resign Sturgeon before it hits you. "Our Choice." What sounds prettier than the words "our choice" for catch words to carry an election they would surely beat the famou .motto "match him" that was hung over Grant's picture in the convention that now. mated him. Now let the central commit tee of the workingmen's party get Hodg son's picture, in the attitude of calling ratification meeting to order, and label it "our choice" and run him for judge. II possesses all the dignity of mien, the classic features, the pensive eye that is in dicativb of intense thought; ho has never been an office seeker, and it would be on a proper appreciation of his great efforts in nursing a party through inanition, und protecting it from the machinations of de signing politicians. Judge Hodgson is good. This suggestion is jamed full of success and The Arous is pleased to be the first to name the coming man. "Our choice" is also good. Mr, Magoffin, in declining the nomination, expressed the following true and well known facts; "The Democratic party is the workingmen's party, and that all ills and grievances can best be redressed therein." What Mr. Magoffin says of the Minnesota democracy and the workingmen's party, applies equal ly to every state io this broad land. The democracy everywhere is the embodiment of the bett interest of the laboring men's interests, and if that organization would consult the best interests of its members, tbey would vote the Democratic ticket; and, when that party gets in power, then will the laboring men get their deserts and what they need aud not before. 1 ne c-tMet.rateii lean show cases; cheaper than any other in the market. The appointment of George W. Pleasants, of this city, as one of the new judges of the Appellate Court for the First district, is ao honor which could not have fallen to one more worthy, and The ARGUS en dorses the statement of the Rock Island editor of the Gazette when he says that "by study, by practice, and by meutal en dowment Judge Pleasants rank among the first jurists of the state." Judge Pleasants was born November 24th. 1823, read law with Horace Iloldcn. Esq , of New York city, and was admitted to the bar at Rochester, N. Y., October 31st, 1 845. He practised law at Williains town, Mass., and at Washington, D. C., until April, 1853, in which year he re moved to Rock Island. In June 1807 he was elected judge of the Sixth judicial circuit for the term of six years, and re elected in 1873, and will probably be elected as long as he will consent to hold the office, as he has the entire confidence and respect of the bar and the people in this district. His decisions have almost invariably been sustained by the higher courts, while his opinions, here at home, have come to be accepted as the ultima turn of law and justice. Vienna Rolls. BUtches, Sores, etc., all of which, however, yield rapidly and surely to Dr. Bull's Blood Mixture, Miasma Rendered Powerless. The most certain way to render power less the miasmatic vapors which produce chills and fever and other malarious dis orders, is to fortify the system against them with that matchless preventive of periodic fevers, Hostetter's Stomach Bit ters, The remedial operation of the Bit ters is no less certain than their preventive effects, and they may be relied upon to overcome cases of fever and ague which resist quinine and the mineral remedies of the pharmacopoeia. Dyspepsia, constipa tion, bilious complaints, rheumatic ail ments and general debility, likewise rapid ly yield to their regulative and touic in fluence. They are an incalcuable blessing to the weak and nervous of both sex?s, an excellent family medicine, and the best safeguard which the traveler or emigrant can tak3 to aa unhealthy climate. Nature, irr-her luxuriance, has clothed the hills and the dales with herb aod nhrub, whose occult natures merely require the earnest appli cation of the ecieutific and inquiring mind to reveal their curative properties, for in the vegetable world a kindly providence has placed healing tor all nations. The only specifics for any disease yet discovered are vegetable in their nature, aDd while quinine has been accepted as the only re medy for one class, the extract of the bu chu plant is rapidly taking its place as a sov ereign remedy for other of those ills afflict humanity. The typo of disease to which it is remedial is a broad one, and its mani festations are legion, but it may be started in general terms that all diseases of the urinary organs, whether caused by climate, irregularity, or self-generated, submit at once to the operation of its power.
