BAKER & CO, MestGr, m Painting Bald Head. A new art industry has been de veloped in this tcity, which promises to create a revolution in tue art world and bring joy to the bald headed brigade. Heretofore the un fortunate members of the lat ter organisation, who, like old Uncle Ned of tuneful and historic memory, have no hair on the tops of their heads, the place where the hair ought to grow, have had recourse to wigs to cover their hirsute shortenings; but now all this is changed. A little French professor has lately arrived in the metropolis, bring ing with him an art that will drive the wigmakers wild with envy and open up possibilities of cranial embellishment that are almost limitless. Siting in one of the theaters a repre sentative of the Star, in looking along the well-known row of baldheuds in the front circle of orchestra chairs, ob served a familiar face. But how changed was the head above it! It no longer giistuneu with barren baldness and the calcium lights did not reflect the glossy splendor of its bald sheen. A luxuriant crop of hair had grown where formerly there was onlv a lleshv waste. ruzziea at tne cnange, the Star repre sentauve leveled bis opera-glass, and putting it a strong focus, proceeded to make investigations. The lenses de monstrated the remarkable fact that the venerable baldhcad was not wearing a wig, and yet on the previous evening tie naa Deen seated in that same mden tical seat with a cranium as smooth as a billiard ball. W aiting until the performance had concluded, the Star representative tumoiea npon tne transformed bald head, with whom he happened to be acquainted, and accosted mm: "Say, old fellow, where did you raise nil tiiat hair?" ku oA-(l "Hair?" with a look of blank aston ishment. "Why, bless your soul, I have no nair. "No hair!" as he raised his hat and showed a close-cut crop of brown hair that seemed iust to have left the hands of the barber, so smooth and glossy was! it. "inen wnat do you call that?" "That? Whv, that is paint. Fact, I assure you. It is the latest thing out Of course you know that we old bald heads feci just a trifle sore on the sub ject of our baldness, and yet we don't like to wear wigs. Too much like show, you know. Well, last week there arrived from France a benefactor of the bald-headed portion of the human race' who paints our beads so cleverly that, as you sec, the hair is almost as natural as the genuine article." "Can I see this wonderful man?" "Certainly; come around to-morrow and I will take you to his studio." The next morning the appointment was kept andthepsendo bald-head con ducted the Star representative to the. second floor of a little house on Fourth avenue, where a knock at the door brought forward a small, quick-yei man, with a grizzly mustache and tht air of a barber rather than an artist, and yet the man's name with the affix "Artist in Bald" was conspicuous!? painted upon tho door. The object of the visit being made known, the Pro fessor entered on a voluble explanation of his art in fluent English. "You must understand, of course,' he said, "that it will not do for me to tell you the secret of my preparation If I were to expose that, then my busi ness would all go to wnat you Ameri cans call the smash. It is harmless, and a well-painted head of hair willlast for a month, is it better than wigs: Sacre! I have made wigs for twenty years, but no more will l tnem make Why, look you here. 1 have made wigs tor negro minstrels tnat 1 could sell for fiftv cents. I haxe made fright wigs, in which tho hair, rises. I have made blonde wigs for the tlivine Sarah, and raven tresses for the sweet Colom bier. But I make them no more. 1 now beneht my fellowmen. . 1 paint tne Leans that are bald. "Do you have much custom?" "Not yet, but 1 will. America wants me. bee the bead of your friend Does he not look twenty vears younger than he did two davs ago, before 1 re stored him to youth aud happiness?'" lhe assertion was too obviously wue to be denied, and when questioned further as to the process, the little Professor rattled on: "You must understand that originallv I was a portrait painter. Then, some how I dropped into wig-making. But my artistic instincts revolted at the de ception the wearing of wigs meant. worked at tho trade for bread, not fame. But one dav it occurred to rat that I, who had so well painted hair on canvas, might paint it on tho human head. I experimented on my grand- lather, f - "It was a grand success, for I made him look so much younger that he married my mother-in-law, who was a widow, and relieved me of the expense of supporting that most adorable woman. Here, you see, is my paint box. It does not contain a wide range of colors. 1 lie principal ones, you will observe, are the umbors, burnt aud raw Sienna, Naples Yellow, Cadmium, Van dyke lirown, Bitumen and Ivory Black, with a few others. With these 1 can paint any tinge of hair desired, from the golden hair of Titian's beauties to the raven gloss oi an Italian count. You will observe by the head of your friend that this hair is painted on pre cisely as in a portrait, all the delicacies of light, shade aud texture being em ployed, and, as a result, 1 present i new man to the world. - A thing of beauty and a joy forever." There was a knock at the door and i customer entered. As the Star repre sentative and his friend passed out, the latter said: "Great scheme, isn't it? Just think of the advantages of paint over a wie. Now I can sit in the .front row at the theaters without being laughed at. In winter I can wear a heavy hat to pro ject my painted baldness, and in sum mer one of the lightest gossamer, through which the breezes will nimbly play. U! yes, it s a great scheme. "What does the Professor charge to Keep you in this condition of perennial hirsuteness?" "Ten doliars a month, and it is worth ivery cent of the money. Shave off mur top hair and have your head painted." Some other day," was the parting rcjuiuuei. j. x. our. The dangers of the electric wire were illustrated at a place of arrrasenrcnt in Baltimore tho other evening. A man wa leaving the Atlantic Garden when he tried to brush aside with his hand what appeared to be a smalt rope dang ling in front of tho entrance. The "small rope" happened to be the wire of the electric light at the entrance, which had been carelessly left hanging by employes, who were repairing the lamp. He received a shock that pros trated him and rendered him insensible for a time. "On his recoyery it was dis covered that his hand was severely injured, the flesh being burnt through to the bore in one place. Baltimore Sun. -In the- Jefferson Market Police Court in New York it was decided re cently that John Also, arrested for at- tAtnntinfr suicide, should be discharged because, although he was found with bis throat cut and a rone about hi" neck. it had not been proved that he intended to kill himself. JS. x. nun. Brush-makers. An op-town grocer was hanging a bunch of corn scrubbing brushes on a hook as a young man was passiug. "Cleanliness is next to godliness," the young man said. "Yes. Your piety ia rather lone some, isn't it?" The young man was interested. "How much do the brushea sell for?" he asked. "Ten cents." "How much do they cost?" "Who?" "You." "Kighty-five cents a dozen." "How much do they cost the maker?" "As near six cents as you can figure it. The wooden back costs one cent; the work of securing the wisps to the back, one cent; the corn two cents; the wire, the finishing, and so on amount to one cent aud eleven-twelfths." "How fast does the brushmaker ac cumulate, wealth at one cent a brush for wiring the wisps to (he backs?" "Not very rapidly. The lightning man, sober anil steady, can make twelve dozen brushes in" a day of ten hours. He is the exceptionally fast man. He ties ten thousand knots to do it. Ordinary men make from eight to ten dozen. Live on that? Well, tho wife can make four dozen, and the chil dren can help. It is indoor work, and not what is called hard work. They work at home. Plenty of people in New York are worse off than the brush makers." If. I. Sun.
