The Herald's New Fork correspondent, after commenting upon tbe shrinkage of values in stocks precedent to tlie late panic, says: Whence came the shrinkage! I asked a n ine and rich old broker, who has kept his eyes open and has lived in tbe world ever t.iiu e he was born, and he said, with an air uf positiveness: "Oold is now expressing itself. It -is nat urally of a domineering disposition, and it is now showing its power." I uske.l an explanation, and he went on: "The demonetization of silver is tbe largest of sevei al causes that have produced this enriiikagc of values. Twelve or fifteen years a" there was a good deal more money in the v. c rid than there is now, and, as the money i.j, beon destroyed, so the property that it rii esented has been destroyed too. When! I say in-ic . I mean gold and silver, which aii.ii are money. Individual notes, - buuk lutes, and government notes m not uiuuev, of course; tbey are tily promises to pay money. Twenty itars ago there was something like $10,000,-i- D.Ouo of money in the world, of which 11. hi ly half was silver and helped regulate thr vrtlui'. The nations of Europe, put up to it by'tt.e Rothschilds and Barings, whose prcv;erty was in gold, which would become moie valuable if somebody else's money could be destroyed, began a war upon silver. They demonetized it, declared it bogus, and drove it out of circulation. At least $1,000,000,000 of it has been degraded, melted up, and sold at a reduced price for use in the arts. Of course, gold has risen in real value, as it came more and more to monopolize the money market. The man who had f 10 in gold saw it grow into $12 in purchasing value before his eyes. The men who had real estate, railroads, and other permanent property saw it shrink command less and less of the money which was becoming more and more scarce. Silver, the handsomest and most useful and least variable of the coins, has been dis credited, and the property of which it was the shield ar.d bulwark has been discredited too. Tbe demonitization of silver is a colos sal crime of European conspirators, of whom this silver-producing nation is the stupid dupe." He thus ran on very earnestly. I don't know whether he was right or not, but I give you his wor Js. And be added: "Don't print my name. It would injure me hm in New York city, where the gold anglorjsafia is now at its height" You us Ward's Operations. New York, May 30. "Oath," speaking of the Marine bank and Grant-Ward failure, says he had a talk with a well-posted Wall street man on tho subject, and asked him: "You were a banker for some time in the vicirinity of Wall street; can you apply any general principles to this failure?" "Yes," said my friend. "The passion to get a great deal of money has become so general that the speculators have found their way into these banks, or Into a great many of tiieiu, where tbe officers were receiving re spectable salaries, but not sums enough to make them millionaires. These yonng specu lators, like Ward, have shown the bank presi dents and directors how to make a great deal of money. Now, Elkins adopted the true course ; when any thing pays you too much money it is either dangerous or dishonest. Six per cent, is all that money is entitled to earn under honest conditions. If it earns more there is something unnatural, uncer tain aud threatening under the pie. There is no limit, " said my friend, "to the ruin than can be wrought by a young man who has never had a business reverse, whose confidence is like his youth, unscarred, who learns from older men on the street the lessons of discretion and silence, and, like Napoleon, goes on amid a perfect sea of obligations until he submerges him self and all who follow him. He thinks that no place is too deep if he still has a foothold, and finally there is a step where he goes under. It is in the highest degree reprehen sible," said my friend, "for a man occupying a fi iueiary trust to have any interest in a speculative house. Here we find the city chamberlain of New York a broker on the street. Most of the officers of the city government seam to have a baud in some of these brokers' houses. Tbe presidents of the banks allow themselves to have a special interest or a secret interest in a broker's fltablishment. Speculation is the curse of this country. It is only one of tbe forms of the nearly universal gambling. The women have as much to do with this condi tion of things as the men, since they expect their husbands to keep them up in tbe high est style of life." The News or the Day. New York, May 20 AtTaits iu financial circles aragoiuon much the same as pre vious to the turbul'ait events of la-t we k. There is no rash or excitement, and the streets in the vicinity of tlw exchange are entirely free, from the tumultuous crowds that gathered in them since Wedn?sday last Ttie attendance of brokers shows no falling off, and the morn ing found them early at their various offices, hurriediy preparing for the opening of the market The board-room at tbe opening of business was in murk-d contrast with the closing days last week all quiet and orderly, no rnshiug of brokers from one slock crowd to another; and the entire absene? of any ex citement whatever. There are no indications now of further big failures, though smalt ones are possible. Tbe feeling is still uneasy and n.-rvons. Nkw York, May a,). Tim failure of W. B. A dispatch has been reoeivad from Bei-Bazar, in Asia Minor, to tlie effect that a toiTilrio conflagration is raging at that place. The fire broke out early in the morning:, and spread with great rapidity, owiti to a high wind which was blowing at Uw time and the lack of facilities for extin gnishing the lire. Captain Heutsch was sentenced to nine years iinprisonnieiit in the house of cor roction, and M. The trial was secret, and very little testimony except that favorable to the government was allowed to reach the public. The friends of M. Kraszeweky denounce tbe determined efforts of Prince Bismarck during the trial to con vict the Polish author in unmeasured twins, and say his actions was inspirwl by a desire for revenge for the intense bitterness shown in many of the author's works toward Germany ; especially towards Prussia.
